Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Stolen Melody

The marble foyer fell deadly silent beneath the vaulted ceiling. Julian’s gaze bored into Victoria, his pulse thrumming violently against his throat. That melody—the lullaby his late wife, Clara, had whispered in secret long before their world unraveled—existed nowhere in written records. Clara had sworn never to sing it outside their nursery walls. Yet here was his six-year-old son, Leo, buried deep within the trembling embrace of a domestic maid named Elena, weeping about that exact refrain.
Victoria smoothed the silk of her crimson gown, though her fingers betrayed a sudden, spastic quiver. ""Julian, darling, don't indulge a child's wild imagination. She probably picked up some nursery tune from the television. Get up, Elena, pack your bags and leave before I have security drag you out.""
Elena did not flinch away from Leo. She held the small boy tighter, burying her face into his navy velvet lapel, her tears soaking the fabric. Julian stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking against the checkerboard tiles. He knelt down slowly, towering over them yet carefully lowering his voice.
""Look at me,"" Julian commanded softly, his steel-gray eyes searching the maid's face.
Elena raised her chin. Up close, stripped of the maid cap and shadowed posture she usually kept, the line of her cheekbones hit him with terrifying familiarity. There was a faint crescent scar beneath her left jawline—a scar Clara had carried since childhood from a shattered glass frame.
""Sing it,"" Julian whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. ""Sing two lines for me, Elena. Right now.""
Victoria lunged forward, her diamond bracelets clattering as she seized Julian's arm. ""Julian, this is insulting! You are humiliating me in our own home over an insolent maid who broke a family heirloom! I demand she leaves!""
""I said, sing it,"" Julian repeated, shaking Victoria's grip off without breaking Elena's gaze.

Elena closed her eyes. A single ragged breath left her lips, followed by a voice trembling with raw, pure grief: ""Sleep beneath the willow shade, where promises are never strayed...""
Victoria turned ghostly pale. Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face, frozen in disbelief. That was Clara's voice—not just the song, but the cadence, the pitch, the exact cadence. Before Julian could speak, Victoria slipped her hand into her beaded clutch, clutching a burner phone and typing a single, urgent code.
