Chapter 4 - The Mark of the Viper

Dante and Elena watched the screen in Marco's command hub. The recording showed a tall, lean man in a standard Moretto security uniform slipping into the staff quarters thirty minutes before the party began. He had paused inside Lily’s tiny bedroom, leaning over her crib before sliding a silver object beneath her mattress.
""Did you recover the object?"" Dante demanded, his voice thick with controlled rage.
Marco placed an evidence bag onto the glass desk. Inside lay a heavy silver medallion depicting a coiled viper wrapped around a bleeding rose.
Elena stared at the symbol, her breath catching in her throat. Color drained completely from her face. She stumbled backward, bumping against the edge of the control console.
Dante caught her arm instantly, his grip firm yet remarkably gentle. ""Elena? You recognize this crest.""
It wasn't a question; it was an observation. Dante’s gaze pierced through her facade. He had interrogated hundreds of enemies, and he knew genuine recognition when he saw it.
""No... it can't be,"" Elena whispered, her voice cracking with terror. ""He promised he would never come near us. He took everything, and he swore he would leave us in peace!""
""Who, Elena?"" Dante pressed, stepping directly into her line of sight. ""Who gave you that promise?""
Elena shook her head frantically, tears spilling down her cheeks. ""The father... Lily's father.""
Dante went completely still. The silence in the command room grew heavy enough to suffocate a man. Marco lowered his head, sensing the dangerous shift in the atmosphere.
""The Serpente Syndicate,"" Dante said slowly, piecing together the broken fragments of a long-standing underworld mystery. ""Victor Castiglione. The head of the Sicilian Viper clan. The man who has tried to dismantle my territory for five years.""
""He doesn't know she exists,"" Elena pleaded desperately, grabbing Dante’s lapels without thinking. ""Victor thinks I died in the harbor fire three years ago! If he finds out Lily is his flesh and blood, he will turn her into a monster. He won't let her live as a normal child!""

Dante stared down at her trembling hands on his shirt, then looked into her terrified hazel eyes—eyes that matched Lily's perfectly.
""He won't touch her,"" Dante vowed, his voice a low, terrifying promise. ""Because as far as the world is concerned from this moment on... Lily is not a Castiglione. She is a Moretto.""
