Chapter 8 - The Gates of Hell

The perimeter sensors didn't just beep; they wailed like a death knell. Through the narrow slit windows of the wine cellar, headlights illuminated the surrounding hills like an invading army. Black SUVs and armored transport vans surrounded the Moretto estate, cutting off every road through the private valley.
Dante ignored Marco, who lay groaning on the floor. He strode to a concealed locker built into the brick cellar wall, punching in a rapid sequence. The steel door swung open, revealing an arsenal of heavy tactical weaponry: assault rifles, body armor, and drum magazines.
""Elena, put this on,"" Dante ordered, tossing her a lightweight Kevlar vest. He then strapped a child-sized armored carrier onto Ethan and picked up Lily, gently sliding a bullet-resistant blanket around her small frame.
""Dante, there are too many of them,"" Elena whispered, her voice trembling. ""Marco said Victor is here himself. If I just go out there, if I surrender myself, he'll let you and Ethan live. It’s me he wants. It’s Lily!""
Dante stopped his preparations. He stepped close to her, his large, blood-smeared hands cupping her face. His gaze was steady, calm, and terrifyingly cold.
""Listen to me, Elena,"" Dante said firmly. ""Men like Victor Castiglione do not leave witnesses. If you walk out there, he will put a bullet in your head, kill my son, slaughter every guard who wears my crest, and raise your daughter in a cage to be a ruthless assassin. You do not negotiate with rabid dogs. You put them down.""
""Dad,"" Ethan interrupted, racking the slide of an empty submachine gun with surprising competence. ""The tunnel under the boathouse. The speedboats are still docked on the lake.""
Dante looked at his young son, a grim flash of pride in his eyes. ""Smart boy. But they will have boats on the water too. We need to create a distraction large enough to blind their thermal satellites.""
Dante turned back to Marco, who was attempting to crawl toward an exit pipe. Dante planted his boot firmly on the traitor's spine, pinning him to the stone.
""You wanted to burn this house down, Marco?"" Dante asked darkly, picking up a heavy remote detonator from the weapons cache. ""I’m going to let you do the honors.""

Dante bent down, cuffed Marco to the main gas manifold beneath the mansion, and armed the central furnace overload timer with a five-minute countdown.
""Move,"" Dante commanded, ushering Elena and the children toward the underground boathouse passage. ""We have four minutes before this mountain becomes a volcano.""
