Chapter 12 - The Hidden Origin

Clara and Evelyn followed Sean into an empty consultation room down the hall. Sean placed the manila envelope on the oval table and slid three printed documents out.
""Sarah Miller isn't Toby’s aunt,"" Sean said bluntly.
Clara gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth. ""What?""
""Toby’s mother, Rebecca Miller, died four years ago in an automobile accident in rural Oregon,"" Sean explained, pointing to the certified death certificate. ""She was a single mother. Sarah was her second cousin, not her sister. But Sarah never legally filed for custody after Rebecca's death.""
Evelyn pulled the papers closer, adjusting her glasses. ""If she never filed for legal guardianship, how did she obtain his healthcare proxy and power of attorney?""
""She forged them,"" Sean said. ""She used an illegal online notary service to create a fraudulent will naming herself as sole guardian, allowing her to claim Rebecca's modest life insurance policy. But that was just the beginning. Sarah didn't take Toby because she wanted a child; she took him because she was drowning in half a million dollars of credit card debt.""
Clara felt sick. ""She planned this from the very beginning.""
""Not the poisoning, not at first,"" Sean said, opening the second folder. ""At first, she just posted normal pictures of him, hoping for mommy-blogger sponsorships. But they didn't get engagement. Then, when Toby caught a severe respiratory virus at age two, Sarah posted a video of him in the emergency room. It went viral. She made ten thousand dollars in forty-eight hours.""
""The algorithm rewarded his suffering,"" Evelyn said, her voice dripping with disgust.
""Exactly,"" Sean agreed. ""Every time he got healthy, her viewer numbers plummeted, and the donations dried up. So she started manufacturing symptoms. She graduated from mild allergens to synthetic hormones. She created a digital monster that demanded more blood to stay profitable.""
Clara closed her eyes, fighting back the waves of rage threatening to consume her. ""Where is his biological father, Sean? Does he even know Toby exists?""
Sean pulled out the third document—a certified birth record from Oregon. In the box labeled Father, a name was printed clearly in black ink:
David Cole.
""David Cole was a wildfire contractor working in the Pacific Northwest,"" Sean said. ""According to the police reports, Rebecca never listed him on the original birth certificate because he was deployed on a fireline when Toby was born. But Rebecca filed an amended paternity declaration two months before she died.""

Evelyn looked up sharply. ""Did Sarah know about him?""
""Sarah paid an investigator five thousand dollars three years ago to confirm David Cole’s whereabouts,"" Sean said, tapping a printout of an encrypted email. ""Then she sent David an anonymous message claiming that his infant son had died alongside Rebecca in the car crash.""
