Chapter 4 - The Transfer Order

""Dr. Mercer, Nurse Vance,"" announced Arthur Sterling, the hospital's legal counsel, stepping ahead of the group. His expression was completely blank, stripped of anything resembling humanity. ""Effective immediately, the legal guardian has exercised her right to transfer Toby Miller to St. Jude’s Private Pavilion across state lines.""
Sean stood up straight, his jaw tightening into iron. ""Sterling, this is madness. The boy is unstable. Transporting him in his current cardiac condition is medical malpractice. He won't survive a two-hour flight without intensive care.""
Sarah stepped forward, her eyes brimming with fresh, theatrical tears as she gestured toward a cameraman standing twenty feet back, filming the exchange through an open-concept lens. ""You've had him for three weeks, Doctor, and his condition has only deteriorated! My followers have raised the funds for a private medical jet. World-renowned specialists are waiting for him.""
""You're killing him, Sarah,"" Clara said aloud, her voice ringing clear through the wide hallway.
The silence that followed was suffocating. Several nurses paused at their carts. A visitor turned their head. The red recording light on the camera never blinked off.
""How dare you,"" Sarah gasped, clutching her chest with one hand while keeping the angle perfectly aligned with the lens. ""I have dedicated my life to this child since my sister passed! You accuse me because your hospital failed him?""
""Clara, step down,"" Sterling ordered sharply, stepping between them. ""Ms. Miller holds full power of attorney and healthcare proxy. A signed transfer order signed by Judge Harmon was processed two hours ago. Security, escort the medical transport team to Room 412.""
Sean tried to block the door, but two burly guards in dark suits firmly took his shoulders, edging him aside with practiced, bureaucratic precision. ""You are interfering with a legal custodial transfer, Dr. Mercer,"" one guard warned softly.
Clara slipped backward into the room before the transport team could roll in their gurney. She ran to Toby's side. The boy was shaking violently now, hyperventilating as the commotion outside grew louder.
""Clara... am I going home?"" Toby cried, reaching up with both hands.

Clara leaned over him, unhooking the monitor leads with deft, practiced fingers while discreetly slipping his pediatric medical records thumb drive into her shoe. ""Listen to me, Toby,"" she whispered into his ear, her voice fierce and unwavering. ""No matter where they take you, I am going to find you. Do you hear me? Do not swallow anything she gives you unless a doctor in a white coat hands it to you directly.""
Before Toby could respond, the transport team barged through the door with an ambulance stretcher, pushing Clara aside. As they strapped the crying four-year-old down, Sarah leaned over the rail, her smartphone raised high above them both, whispering into the microphone: ""Pray for us, everyone. Our journey to salvation begins now.""
