Chapter 8 - The Law and the Lawless

The deafening thrum of helicopter blades shook the glass panes of the third-floor suite, blowing dead leaves and powdered stone across the destroyed foyer below. A sleek, civilian-grade helicopter bearing private security markings had landed square in the center of Vincent's courtyard.

Vincent moved to the reinforced balcony window, peering through binoculars. Stepping out of the aircraft was Julian Vance.

Julian wore an impeccably tailored camel-hair coat, his silver hair neatly styled, looking like an ambassador rather than a cartel financier. Beside him walked three men in sharp navy suits carrying briefcases—corporate lawyers—flanked by four heavily armed private security personnel wearing private contractor badges. Behind them, at the foot of the drive, the flashing blue lights of the federal marshal convoy were already clearing the tree line.

Julian was playing both sides of the board simultaneously: the grieving biological father protected by private bodyguards, flanked by legal counsel, with the federal government acting as his unwitting battering ram.

""He wants the spectacle,"" Vincent muttered, his jaw tightening. ""He wants to take her in broad daylight with cameras and warrants, so I can never touch him legally again.""

""Vincent,"" Dominic said, stepping up beside him with an anti-materiel rifle. ""I can take him out from here. One clean shot through the canopy before the marshals round the bend.""

""No,"" Vincent commanded firmly, pushing the rifle barrel down. ""If Julian dies here, Clara goes straight into federal child protective services under a sealed court order. Vance's lawyers would tie her up in orphanages across three jurisdictions while his assets swallow her whole. We beat him on his own stage.""

Vincent stripped off his blood-stained shirt, tossing it onto the floor. Lena quickly handed him a clean black shirt and a fresh tailored charcoal suit jacket from his wardrobe. With practiced precision, he adjusted his cuffs, hiding the bandage over his ribs beneath fine Italian wool.

He bent down and lifted Clara gently into his arms. Her brace clicked once, resting securely against his hip. She wrapped her small arms tightly around his neck, burying her face against his collar.

""Dominic, keep the weapons hidden. Tell the boys downstairs to stand down completely,"" Vincent said, stepping out toward the grand marble staircase. ""Open the front doors. Let the circus walk in.""
