Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Whisper

The metallic clatter of the serving tray echoed off the concrete pillars like a gunshot, vibrating straight into Sofia’s teeth. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs as she dropped to her knees beside the heavy leather armchair. The concrete floor was cold through the thin fabric of her uniform trousers, damp with motor oil and forgotten rainwater.
The man slumped in front of her was completely unresponsive at first. His tailored black suit hung loose around his broad shoulders, rumpled from whatever violence had preceded this quiet ambush. Across his throat, just below the sharp line of his stubbled jaw, a faint puncture mark oozed a tiny bead of crimson. The chemical scent lingering in the air was sharp and sweet, reminiscent of industrial ether and bitter almonds.
""Sir? Can you hear me?"" Sofia whispered urgently, her hands trembling as she grabbed his upper arm. His muscles were rigid, locked in the grip of whatever paralytic had just been forced into his bloodstream. ""I’m getting you out of here.""
The man’s heavy eyelids fluttered. Dark lashes parted to reveal dilated pupils that rolled upward before snapping into focus on her face. A bead of cold sweat trailed down his temple into his wavy, disheveled dark hair. He parted dry, pale lips, his chest heaving under the black dress shirt.
""Did you... see them?"" His voice was barely a scratch against the subterranean hum of the parking garage’s ventilation shafts.
Sofia leaned in closer, terrified that the two men in black suits would double back. The taillights of their black sedan had vanished into the winding exit ramp seconds ago, but the cold finality of their voices still hung in the air.
""One of them said... Vane,"" she murmured, glancing nervously over her shoulder toward the ramp.
The effect was instantaneous and terrifying. The man’s pupils constricted, a sudden surge of adrenaline forcing his jaw tight. A shudder tore through his frame, fighting against the synthetic paralysis.
""Get me out of here,"" he strained, his fingers clawing blindly into the leather armrest. ""Now. If they know you heard that name... neither of us survives the night.""
Sofia hesitated for a fraction of a second. She was just a banquet server finishing a double shift at the Grand Elysium, clutching a silver tray she had forgotten to return to the kitchen. She had an ailing mother waiting in a cramped apartment in the Lower Ward and a debt collector who called every Tuesday. Getting involved with armed men executing hits in executive parking bays was a death sentence.
Yet, as she looked down at his dark, pleading eyes, she realized the terrible truth: she was already involved. The security cameras in sector four were blinking red right above their heads. The men in suits might have missed her, but the surveillance hub wouldn't.
""Can you stand?"" she asked, hooking her arm beneath his shoulders.
May you like
He gritted his teeth, letting out a stifled groan of pure agony as he forced his rubbery legs beneath him. Sofia bore nearly all his weight. He smelled of cedarwood, rain, and fear. Every step forward felt like wading through wet cement. She dragged him toward the employee service corridor, leaving the dropped silver tray spinning slowly in the dim light behind them.
Just as the steel fire door swung shut behind them, Sofia heard the distant, unmistakable screech of tires returning down the ramp.
