Chapter 15 - The Full Circle

On Arthur’s eighty-fifth birthday, the community gathered once more inside the Sarah Vance Woodworking School. The massive oak harvest table was laden with roasted meats, garden vegetables, and an array of homemade pastries from Miller’s Bakery.
At the head of the table sat Arthur, surrounded by former apprentices who were now master carpenters, shop owners, and teachers. Leo raised a glass, his voice thick with emotion, thanking the old craftsman who had snatched him from the brink of despair.
When the lights dimmed, Clara, now a poised twelve-year-old girl, walked slowly through the crowd carrying a two-tiered white celebration cake decorated with pastel piping. On top burned a single pink candle—an exact replica of the cake she had stood before as a toddler with two coins in her palm.
She placed it gently before Arthur.
"Make a wish, Grandpa," she whispered, kissing his weathered temple.
Arthur looked around the glowing room: at Mark, at Eleanor, at the young craftsmen, and finally at the granddaughter whose innocent plea had salvaged his remaining years.

"I don't have anything left to wish for, Clara," Arthur said, his voice resonant and full. "Every prayer I ever had is already sitting in this room."
He leaned forward, and with one breath full of peace, blew out the solitary flame into the warm, embracing dark.
