Chapter 3 - Morning at the Window

Sunlight cut through the cracked blinds of Arthur’s kitchen, illuminating swirls of dust motes. The morning routine was always meticulous: boil oats, mash half a banana for Clara, count the medication pills, and check the classifieds for odd carpentry jobs.

A sharp knock broke the stillness.

Arthur opened the scarred wooden door to find Mark standing in the hallway, holding two fresh baguettes and looking visibly stunned.

"Mr. Miller?" Arthur asked, adjusting his spectacles. "Is there something wrong with the cake?"

"Arthur," Mark breathed, stepping aside to reveal the narrow street below. Two television news vans were parked along the curb, their satellite dishes slowly rising against the pale sky. "You need to see this. The video... everyone saw it."

Clara peeked around Arthur’s trousers, chewing on a piece of toast. Below, neighbors who had barely offered a passing nod over the past three years were gathering near the bakery.

Arthur retreated into the dimness of his room, his pulse racing. He was a man of the quiet generation, one that bore suffering in dignified silence. To have his poverty displayed across global screens felt initially like a profound indignity.

"We don't need charity, Mark," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with old pride.

"It’s not charity, Arthur," Mark replied softly, gesturing toward the street. "It's a mirror. And people want to help you hold it up."
