THE TEAR UPON THE COLD LINEN / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Smirk in the Shadows

Mark stayed on his knees until the sterile linoleum chilled his bones. Beside the gurney, his palms gripped the steel frame until his knuckles turned bloodless white. Underneath the stiff white sheet lay Elena, his fiancée, whose pulse had ceased scarcely two hours prior. Her passing had been declared an unpredictable heart failure, yet nothing about Elena’s sudden decline felt natural. Her voice still seemed to echo along the tiled walls, a frantic whisper from the previous night begging him to check the attic safe.

Behind him, soft footsteps receded toward the heavy exit doors. His uncle Robert and aunt Clara had already yielded to exhaustion, their shoulders slumped under synthetic hospital lighting. Only Clara’s daughter, Chloe, lingered behind.

Mark turned his head slowly, wiping the salt from his cheeks with his olive sleeve. Across the stainless-steel morgue lockers, Chloe stood with her arms tightly folded over her beige ribbed cardigan. Her floral sundress looked jarring against the industrial coldness of the basement. He expected tears, or at least the hollow shock that gripped the rest of the household. Instead, Chloe’s chin was tilted upward.

As their eyes locked, the faint arch of her lips hardened into an unmistakable smirk. It was fleeting, vanished in the span of a single breath, but it burned into Mark’s mind. Before he could speak, she pivoted sharply on her heels and pushed through the double swinging doors.

Mark pushed himself up, his chest heaving. He reached out to gently touch Elena’s covered forehead one last time. As his trembling fingers brushed the rim of the sheet, his thumb caught on something rigid pinned beneath the underside of the mattress frame. He tugged gently, pulling free an unsealed envelope marked with his initials and stained with fresh soot.
