Chapter 11 - Controlled Deceleration

""What is that?"" Mark demanded, staring at the flashing red interface.
Miller's knuckles turned white on the steering wheel. ""Remote interference. Someone’s overriding the electronic braking system!""
The sedan surged forward, accelerating past eighty miles per hour down the winding mountain pass. Miller stomped on the brake pedal, but it offered no resistance, sinking uselessly to the floor mat. The engine roared, controlled by an external uplink feeding through the vehicle's onboard telematics.
Ahead lay Devil’s Elbow, a treacherous hairpin turn overlooking a three-hundred-foot ravine. The guardrails were ancient, rusted timber posts that would offer zero resistance to a speeding vehicle.
""They hacked the navigation unit!"" Miller yelled, wrestling with the stiffened steering column. ""Hold on!""
Mark grabbed the emergency handbrake, but it was locked in its housing by a mechanical servo. Looking out the rear window, a heavy armored SUV was barreling down on them from behind, its massive steel grille pushing closer, attempting to force them off the road before the turn.

Mark reached into the glove compartment, finding Miller’s tactical flashlight and a heavy steel screwdriver. He jammed the tool behind the center console screen, violently tearing the wires out. Sparks showered over his lap as the screen died.
Miller yanked the wheel with all his might. The sedan spun sideways, rubber burning through the rain, skidding along the edge of the precipice. The pursuing SUV clipped their rear fender, sending the sedan crashing through the roadside barriers into a thick grove of pines.
