Chapter 14 - The Garden in Bloom

Spring arrived with explosive color across the Hudson Valley. The lawns of the Sterling estate, once manicured with stiff, joyless precision to impress visiting diplomats, were now dotted with wooden swing sets, chalk drawings on the stone flagstones, and rows of wild sunflowers planted by Noah and his grandfather.

It was Noah’s sixth birthday.

There were no tuxedoed waiters, no ice sculptures, and no society photographers capturing promotional portraits for lifestyle magazines. Instead, long wooden picnic tables were set up beneath the blooming apple orchards, laden with grilled burgers, fresh lemonade, homemade strawberry shortcake, and oversized bowls of popcorn.

Dozens of children from the local elementary school were running across the grass, playing tag while golden retriever puppies tumbled after them.

Agent Miller, now retired from the FBI and serving as head of global security for Claire’s foundation, stood by the barbecue pit laughing with Marcus over burnt hot dogs.

Claire sat at the picnic table, wearing denim overalls and canvas sneakers, painting small watercolor butterflies on the cheeks of Noah’s school friends. Her laughter drifted across the orchard, bright, musical, and completely unburdened.

Arthur stood near the garden pavilion, watching the scene unfold. For the first time in his sixty-five years, the perpetual knot of anxiety in his stomach—the constant pressure to perform, to protect the empire, to project invulnerability—was entirely gone.

Noah came sprinting across the lawn, his sneakers stained with grass, holding a half-eaten slice of strawberry cake.

"Grandpa! Grandpa, look!" Noah cheered, pointing toward the apple trees. "A blue jay! It landed right on Mr. Barnaby!"

Arthur looked over. Propped securely in the fork of an old apple tree was the scuffed brown teddy bear, his stitched silver belly catching the afternoon sun, watching over the orchard like a quiet, steadfast sentinel.

Arthur scooped Noah up into the air, making the boy shriek with delighted laughter, before setting him down on his shoulders.

"He’s protecting the orchard, Noah," Arthur laughed. "Just like you protected us."
