Chapter 6 - The Road to Havenwood

The black Mercedes Maybach tore through the torrential downpour that had suddenly engulfed upstate New York. Windshield wipers slashed frantically against the blinding sheets of grey water, mirroring the storm raging inside Arthur Sterling’s conscience.

Beside him in the rear seat, Noah slept peacefully, exhausted by the harrowing ordeal of the morning, clutching Arthur’s silver-threaded handkerchief like a security blanket.

Up front, Marcus Vance—Arthur’s lifelong personal attorney and true friend, who had spent the last forty-five minutes mobilizing every federal judge and state prosecutor in the district—glanced into the rearview mirror.

"Arthur, the warrants are signed," Marcus said grimly. "Havenwood Care Facility in Cedar Ridge is ostensibly an exclusive private retreat for wealthy families dealing with substance abuse and psychological breakdowns. In reality, it’s an off-the-books holding pen run by an unscrupulous private equity group affiliated with Victoria’s offshore syndicate. State Police tactical units are converging on the perimeter right now."

Arthur stared out the rain-streaked window at the dark pines rushing past. "How could I have been so blind, Marcus? Claire came to my office ten months ago. She tried to tell me about the discrepancies in the foundation’s books. I was so angry... so obsessed with protecting the family brand from a scandal... I told her to grow up and take responsibility. I didn't even look at her audit."

"Victoria is a world-class psychological predator, Arthur," Marcus replied softly. "She targeted you when Evelyn passed. You were drowning in loneliness, and she provided an island of counterfeit peace. Don't blame yourself for being human. Blame yourself only if you don't make it right."

Arthur looked down at Noah’s innocent face. "I will spend every remaining breath, every dollar I possess, making it right."

Twenty minutes later, the Maybach crested a heavily wooded ridge. Ahead, behind towering ten-foot iron gates topped with razor wire and surveillance cameras, stood Havenwood: an imposing limestone mansion hidden deep within eighty acres of dense forest.

The iron gates were already forced open. Red and blue flashing lights from four State Police cruisers painted the rain-drenched driveway in garish neon hues. Arthur felt his pulse surge with primal terror. Please, God. Let her be alive.
