Chapter 4 - The Currency of Empty Hands

Julian sat in his executive corner office on the forty-second floor of the Meridian Tower. The view was panoramic, offering an unobstructed horizon of San Francisco Bay, but to Julian, the room felt like a glass holding cell.

Marcus threw a manila folder onto Julian’s polished mahogany desk.

"She knew what she was doing, Julian," Marcus said, his voice flat with exhaustion. "The mezzanine financing for the Series C rollout was underwritten by her family’s legacy trust. When she executed the withdrawal clause, she didn't violate a single covenant. You signed the indemnity waivers two years ago when you wanted to keep her off the governance board."

Julian rubbed his eyes with both palms. He hadn't shaved in four days. The crisp edges of his dark suit were wrinkled, and the scent of stale bourbon lingered faintly on his collar.

"I didn't think she would actually pull the pin," Julian muttered. "She was Leo’s mother. She stayed home. She baked bread, for God’s sake."

"She has an MBA from Wharton, Julian," Marcus said, leaning across the desk, his knuckles planted firmly. "She ran our seed operations while you were still pitching angel syndicates in Palo Alto. You forgot who you married because you wanted an audience instead of a partner."

Julian winced. Marcus had known them both since their college days. He had stood as Julian’s best man at the vineyard wedding, toast in hand, praising Elena’s quiet brilliance.

"Where is she, Marcus?" Julian asked, his voice cracking. "She’s got my son. I have legal rights. I can file an emergency petition for parental alienation—"

"Don't be an idiot," Marcus cut in harshly. "Her attorney already filed a formal notification of temporary relocation with the county clerk. She didn't cross international borders. She didn't conceal the child. She offered scheduled supervised contact through counsel once you complete the court’s mandatory mediation intake. Do you know what an emergency petition will do right now? The press will pick it up. The tech blogs will run the story. Our lead investors will pull the valuation down forty percent before the bell rings Monday."

Marcus grabbed his briefcase and moved toward the door. He paused with his hand on the steel handle.

"Vanessa called the front desk twice today," Marcus added, without looking back. "She wants to know if you're attending the opening gala on Thursday."

Julian looked at his empty hands resting on the pristine desk. "Tell security she’s not permitted on this floor."

Marcus let out a short, humorless breath. "Too late to play the virtuous husband, Jules. The stage is already empty."
