Chapter 7 - The Screen Between Worlds

At 10:00 AM on Friday, Elena sat in the small study of the Silver Pine cottage. Outside the window, a light spring rain pattered against the fir boughs. She wore a simple charcoal knit sweater, no jewelry, and her hair fell naturally past her shoulders.

The laptop chime chimed, and the secure video portal blinked to life.

A split screen appeared. On the left was David Klein, flanked by a junior associate. On the lower panel sat Julian.

Elena felt an instinctual tightening in her stomach, but she breathed through it, keeping her shoulders relaxed. Julian looked drastically different. The slick, arrogant sheen was gone. His hair was cropped shorter, the beard was trimmed down to clean stubble, and the dark circles beneath his eyes spoke of chronic sleeplessness.

When his eyes met the camera, Julian froze. He leaned forward slightly, his lips parting as if he wanted to speak before realizing the legal decorum required silence.

"Good morning, everyone," Elena’s attorney, Sarah Chen, began smoothly from her own window. "We are here to review the stipulated custody arrangement and the preliminary parental visitation schedule."

For forty minutes, the attorneys spoke in the bloodless vocabulary of family law: residential jurisdictions, standard deviation holidays, medical indemnification, and structured telephonic communication.

Elena watched Julian throughout the proceeding. Whenever her name was mentioned, his eyes flickered down, his hands clenching and unclenching on the conference table.

"Mr. Vance," Sarah Chen said, turning the focus to Julian. "Do you agree to the supervised sixty-day reintegration period, to take place within the county of the child’s primary residence?"

Julian looked directly into the camera lens. For the first time in an hour, he bypassed the lawyers.

"Elena," he said.

"Mr. Vance," Klein warned quietly. "Address the chair."

Julian ignored his counsel. "Elena, I agree. I’ll come up there. I’ll stay at whatever hotel your counsel approves. I’ll follow every rule." His voice cracked, losing its corporate polish. "I just... I want to tell you how—"

Elena reached forward and raised her hand, a calm, gentle gesture that instantly silenced him.

"We aren't here for that, Julian," Elena said softly. Her tone carried no hatred, no venom, but an impenetrable boundary. "The past is already paid for. We are here to build a safe bridge for our son. Nothing more."

Julian lowered his head. He swallowed hard, then nodded.

"I understand," he whispered. "I agree to all terms."
