Chapter 1 - The Weight of Porcelain

The ceramic rim bit into Amy’s palms, slick with grease and cold gravy. Fifteen plates, heavy and imported, stacked like a precarious tower against her chest. Beneath them, strapped tightly against her ribs in the faded gray carrier, four-month-old Leo radiated an unnatural, furnace-like heat. His cheek was pressed against her collarbone, his breath shallow, ragged, and fast.
Around her, laughter washed over the dining hall like an abrasive tide. The crystal chandelier refracted golden light across twenty guests dressed in tailored linen and silk. Victoria stood near the centerpiece, laughing into a flute of champagne, radiating the practiced charm of a woman who had never scraped a dish in her life.
"He's burning up," Amy had whispered, her voice cracking under the room's humidity. "I need to take him upstairs."
Victoria had barely turned, her gaze sliding over Amy as if evaluating an untidy piece of rented furniture. "After you serve the coffee."
Then the front foyer door swung wide. Mark stepped through, arms laden with pastel gift boxes from his late flight across the coast. His grin died in the split second his eyes tracked the scene: his mother holding court in silk, his wife trembling beneath heavy dishes, their child whimpering against her chest.
"Amy?"
She could not mask the exhaustion. "Your mother said I couldn't stop yet."
The stack slipped an inch in Amy’s grasp. Before the porcelain could shatter against the parquet floor, Mark dropped the bags, stepped across the threshold, and took the heavy weight from her hands with a single, controlled motion. He set the towering plates squarely on the white damask table, right beside Victoria’s custom floral cake. The porcelain clattered loudly, silencing the entire room.

"Nobody treats my wife like this," Mark said. His tone wasn't loud, but it carried the chilling, irrevocable weight of a door slamming shut. "Especially not in our home."
Victoria froze, champagne flute hovering in mid-air.
