Chapter 13 - The Echo of the Past

Two years after the night of the dinner party, an unexpected letter arrived in the mail. It did not have Victoria’s monogrammed wax seal; instead, it bore the letterhead of an estate attorney in the city.

Arthur Vance had passed away, and as part of settling his affairs, he had instructed his office to forward a private personal note to Mark.

Mark sat at the kitchen table, unfolding the single sheet of cream stationery.

Dear Mark, the aging attorney had written in shaky, spidery ink. I spent forty years helping your family protect its wealth. We built trusts, shielded assets, and guarded the family ledger like sacred scripture. But in my final months, sitting alone in this large, silent apartment, I have come to realize that we protected everything except the things that could keep us warm.

When you walked out of that boardroom two years ago, your mother called you a fool. But that evening, after the meeting adjourned, I sat at that mahogany table and wished to God that my own son had possessed the courage to tell me the truth about myself before we drifted into polite strangers.

You chose your wife and your child over an empire of dust. Never apologize for that victory.

Mark folded the letter slowly, slid it back into its envelope, and tucked it into a drawer beside their family photo album.
