Chapter 1 - The Confession at Dusk

The dining room remained frozen in the wake of Emma’s words. The crystal chandelier overhead cast sharp, fractured beams of light across the mahogany table, catching the rim of Julian’s untouched wine glass. Beside him, Victoria sat rigid, her manicured fingers still wrapped tight around her crystal goblet. The delicate stem looked ready to snap under the sudden pressure of her grip. Across from them, Maria kept her head bowed, her breath hitching silently behind the crumpled linen napkin she clutched like a shield.
Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms against the dark, polished wood. His tailored royal blue suit jacket shifted slightly, the fabric catching the low amber glow of the room. He didn’t look at his wife; his gaze stayed anchored on his seven-year-old daughter. Emma had never lied before, at least not with eyes so wide, clear, and unblinking.
"What did you say, Emma?" Julian asked. His voice was low, measured, carrying the heavy weight of an authority that demanded absolute clarity.
Victoria cut in before the child could speak, her tone shrill despite her effort to maintain composure. "Julian, she is seven years old! She is repeating nonsense to protect a servant who cannot even keep track of private household ledgers. Maria has been stealing from the estate account, and she misplaced the family heirloom brooch last week. How could Emma possibly be responsible for missing funds and stolen jewelry?"
"I didn't steal the money, Daddy," Emma said quietly, ignoring her mother’s sharp glare. Her hands rested flat on the edge of the dining table, small and pale against the dark wood. "Maria didn't take the brooch, either. I took it because Mommy told me to put it in Maria’s coat pocket."
Silence crashed over the dining hall once more. Maria’s breath caught in her throat. She slowly lifted her head, her brown eyes wide with sheer disbelief, tears pooling along her dark lashes.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, shifting from Emma’s earnest face to Victoria’s suddenly pale profile. A faint, cold smile tugged at the corner of Victoria's painted lips, but her throat moved in a hard swallow.

"Victoria," Julian murmured, each syllable deliberate. "What coat pocket?"
Before Victoria could answer, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open. Standing in the threshold was Detective Vance, the private investigator Julian had hired three days ago to investigate the household leaks. But Vance wasn't looking at Maria. His eyes were locked directly on Victoria, and in his hand was an open leather dossier.
