Chapter 5 - The Hidden Nursery

The accusation hung in the silence of the dining room like poison gas. Julian could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner, rhythmic and merciless. His mind raced through the names of everyone who had been on his payroll for over a decade. The butler, Arthur. The head groundskeeper, Thomas. And Vance, whose family had provided security to the Sterlings for two generations.
"You're lying," Julian growled, stepping between Marcus and Victoria. "Clara's ship sank due to an engine failure. The coast guard investigation—"
"Was bought and paid for by the money your wife just moved through Maria’s account," Marcus interrupted, tapping his silver-tipped cane on the floor. "You think she stole four hundred and fifty thousand dollars for designer dresses? She was paying off the harbormaster who signed the falsified report twelve years ago. He ran out of patience."
Victoria let out a sudden, ragged sob, covering her face with her hands. "He was going to ruin us, Julian! He was going to bring the police to our front door! I did it to protect this family! To protect Emma!"
"Do not speak Emma's name!" Julian snapped, his voice finally breaking into raw fury. He turned on her, his eyes blazing. "You used our daughter to hide a brooch to frame Maria! You used my daughter as a shield!"
"Emma isn't your daughter, Julian," Victoria whispered.
The words were barely louder than a breath, but they hit Julian with the force of a physical blow. He stumbled back a half-step, the air rushing out of his lungs.
"What did you say?" he whispered.
Victoria looked up, tears streaking her perfectly applied makeup, her expression twisted into a bitter, venomous grimace. "Clara didn't die on that boat, Julian. She survived long enough to reach the shore. She gave birth in a private clinic three weeks later."

Marcus Kane’s cane hit the floor with a deafening crack. "Where is she, Victoria? Where is Clara's child?"
Victoria looked past both men, her eyes landing on the corridor where Maria had taken Emma moments before. "She's in the conservatory right now."
