Chapter 1 - The Blood in the Marble

The silence inside the master suite was shattered by the rhythmic, heavy drip of water hitting polished Italian stone. Outside in the hallway, three armed bodyguards stood with weapons drawn, their fingers white against black polymer frames. Between their raised gun barrels and the bathroom door stood Julian Vance, CEO of Vance Global Logistics—a man accustomed to commanding boardroom empires and navigating the city’s underground currents. Yet now, the scent of copper and warm floral bath soap made his breath hitch.

Inside the freestanding porcelain tub sat Emma, his two-year-old daughter. Her fine blonde curls clung damply to her forehead, her pale pink dress soaked through. Beside her towered Bruno, a hundred-and-forty-pound black Cane Corso whose breed alone commanded fear. The beast stood completely immobile in the warm water, its cropped ears pitched forward, black flank rising and falling in measured, agonizing breaths. A jagged, deep laceration ran down his left foreleg, staining the pristine soapy foam pale crimson.

""Emma, sweetheart... slowly stand up,"" Julian whispered, his voice stripped of all corporate authority. He took one deliberate step onto the wet tile, signaling for the guards behind him to hold their fire.

Emma did not flinch. With small, chubby hands, she dipped a white plastic scoop into the water and poured it gently over the dog’s bleeding leg. ""Daddy, look. He has an ouchie,"" she murmured, glancing up with wide, completely unafraid eyes. She pressed a small white sponge against the ragged wound.

The beast’s dark brown eyes blinked slowly. Instead of snapping or snarling under the stinging touch of water against raw flesh, the dog lowered its massive square jaw, resting its chin softly upon Emma’s small knees. A low, shuddering sigh escaped its chest.

Elena, the head housekeeper, stood trembling near the linen closet, knuckles pressed hard against her teeth. ""Sir... he breached the perimeter fence ten minutes ago,"" she stammered in a hushed gasp. ""The motion alarms didn't trip. The laser tripwires were cut from the outside. He was running from the treeline.""

Julian crouched low, kneeling on the cold floor beside the rim of the tub. His eyes shifted from the dog's wounded leg to its thick collar—an unbranded, heavy titanium weave embedded with an encrypted military-grade transponder. He reached forward with a slow, flat palm. Bruno’s nostril flared, taking in Julian’s scent without moving a muscle.

""He didn't break in to hunt,"" Julian whispered, his gaze catching sight of a faint serial number scorched into the dog’s inner ear leather: Unit 09 - Project Cerberus.

Suddenly, the encrypted transponder around Bruno’s neck clicked, its tiny recessed LED light shifting from dull red to a sharp, flashing blue.
