Chapter 7 - The Ghost of Sarah

Julian stood frozen under the flickering halogen bulb of the cellar, the silver band burning cold against his palm. His mind raced backward through seven years of mourning, through a closed-casket memorial and the empty grief that had defined his life until Emma was born via a surrogate carrying Sarah’s frozen embryos. The world had told him Sarah was vaporized in a liquid gas explosion in Zurich. It had all been a fabricated theater orchestrated by Ares Biomimetic to conscript her brilliant research into autonomous biological weapons.
""She kept you alive,"" Julian said aloud, his voice cracked with emotion as he stared into Bruno's solemn eyes. ""You protected her, didn't you?""
Bruno nudged Julian's thigh with the side of his broad head, giving a single, decisive nod-like motion. The dog was not an animal driven by base instinct; the neural modifications referenced in the tablet had granted the beast a level of situational comprehension that bordered on human intuition.
Julian knelt down, ripping off the sleeve of his black dress shirt. With practiced, steady motions, he bound Bruno’s torn leg, tying the knot tightly to stanch the oozing blood. ""Pier 44 is an industrial graveyard. If Ares has Emma there, they have an entire strike team waiting in ambush. They expect an unarmed, grieving father desperate to trade an animal for his child.""
Julian turned back to the cellar's false wall, entering an emergency sequence into a hidden control panel disguised as a temperature gauge for the wine collection. The heavy rack pivoted outward, revealing a climate-controlled tactical locker stocked with suppressed carbines, Kevlar vests, night-vision optics, and high-yield distraction charges.
He strapped a lightweight ceramic plate carrier over his chest, chambered a round into a customized short-barreled rifle, and slung it across his back beneath a heavy dark trench coat. He then fitted a tactical nylon harness onto Bruno, fastening two magnetic breaching charges into the side pouches.

""We aren't going to negotiate, boy,"" Julian whispered, clipping a remote detonator to his wrist. ""We’re going to tear them apart.""
Bruno stepped toward the utility tunnel, teeth gleaming in the faint light, a low battle-hum rising from his throat.
