Chapter 15 - An Oath in the Dark

The morning sun broke through the coastal fog, casting long, golden fingers of light across the quiet mountain highway miles north of the city.

The armored van sat parked deep within an abandoned logging trail, completely concealed beneath a canopy of dense pine branches. The engine was silent, ticking as it cooled in the crisp morning air.

Inside the rear cabin, Sarah finished securing a field suture across Bruno’s front leg. Her hands, skilled and steady, worked with maternal tenderness as she tied the final knot and smoothed down the hound’s thick black fur. Bruno lay stretched out on a wool blanket, his heavy head resting peacefully on his paws, his breathing deep, even, and calm.

Emma sat cross-legged beside him, fast asleep, her head pillowed gently against the dog’s broad ribs. Her small thumb was tucked into her mouth, her tiny chest rising and falling in perfect unison with the beast's rhythmic breaths.

""Keller wasn't lying about the sub-committee,"" Sarah said softly, not looking up from Bruno’s bandage. ""Ares won't stop. They have facilities in three countries. They know Emma's genetic profile is the master key to the next phase.""

Julian stepped closer, looking down at the scars crisscrossing the sleeping hound's muscular body. He reached out, his hand resting gently against Bruno's cropped ear. The dog opened one dark brown eye, meeting Julian’s gaze with absolute, unyielding loyalty.

""Let them come,"" Julian replied, his voice deadly quiet, devoid of fear. ""We aren't running anymore.""
