Chapter 1 - The Call That Shook the Hearth

The festive banners draped across the crown molding seemed to mock the scene unfolding below. What was supposed to be Lily’s seventh birthday dinner had deteriorated into a crime scene before anyone even touched the cake. The air smelled of burnt candles, spilled grape juice, and sour adrenaline.
Richard Sterling, patriarch of the Sterling shipping empire, stood stiff as an iron pillar. His face, usually a mask of stoic aristocratic pride, burned crimson with sheer fury. He glared down at his granddaughter, trembling on the polished hardwood floor. Lily wore her pale pink ballerina outfit, a lace tutu stiffened with sugar water, now wrinkled beneath her huddled knees. Her small hands clutched the hem of her skirt, trying to pull herself into an invisible ball as large, hot tears traced trails down her pale cheeks.
""You are an absolute disgrace to this family's blood,"" Richard hissed, his voice trembling with a venom that silenced the ten relatives gathered around the buffet table.
""Get your hands away from my daughter!"" Eleanor screamed, dropping to her knees and throwing her arms around the girl. Eleanor’s cream dress brushed against spilled juice, soaking the pristine silk with a dark, bruising stain. She buried Lily’s head into her collarbone, shielding the child with her own spine. Her knuckles turned ghostly white as she held Lily tight, her hazel eyes blazing up at the man she had called Father-in-law for eight years.
Across the room, Julian stood rigidly beside the French doors. He had not lowered his phone from his ear. His jaw twitched, a muscle dancing violently against his pale cheek. He wore his black tailored suit, the uniform of the corporate shark his father had spent three decades grooming. But beneath the pristine fabric, Julian’s chest rose and fell in ragged, shallow gasps.
""Yes, officer. We need an immediate dispatch to 44 Crestview Terrace,"" Julian said into the receiver. His voice was cold, flat, and stripped of all the deference he had offered his father his entire life. ""Domestic disturbance. Verbal assault. And I suspect deliberate destruction of state evidence.""
Richard’s gaze whipped toward his son, his gray brows lowering into a jagged ridge. ""Hang up that telephone, Julian. You do not invite law enforcement into Sterling private affairs. You know what is at stake.""
May you like
Julian did not blink. He kept the receiver pressed against his ear, his eyes dead and unyielding. ""The sirens are already two miles out, Richard.""
A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the living room. Lily let out a muffled hiccup into Eleanor’s throat. Slowly, the girl’s trembling hand slipped beneath the sash of her pink tutu, pulling out a crumpled, mud-stained piece of cardstock. As Eleanor shifted, her eyes locked onto the photograph Lily had hidden all afternoon—and Eleanor’s breath vanished completely.
