Chapter 15 - The Final Threshold

Julian stayed low against the muddy embankment, pine needles digging into his palms. The gunfire stopped, replaced by the sharp hiss of a punctured radiator.

""Check the driver!"" one of the gunmen shouted, his boots crunching over broken glass and wet gravel as he advanced toward the wreckage of the interceptor.

Julian lunged out from behind the rear bumper, swinging the heavy, foot-long aluminum flashlight with the full momentum of his body. The solid metal head struck the first gunman across the temple with a sickening crack. The man folded instantly, dropping his assault rifle into the slush.

Julian didn't pause. He grabbed the fallen weapon, rolled across the wet earth, and brought the stock to his shoulder just as the second gunman cleared the porch stairs.

""Freeze!"" Julian roared, his voice cutting through the wind like a thunderclap.

The second man, caught in the open, froze with his pistol half-raised. He looked into Julian’s eyes and saw nothing left to negotiate with—only a father who had been pushed past the brink of humanity. The gunman slowly opened his fingers, letting the sidearm clatter against the wooden steps.

""Where is Richard?"" Julian asked, his voice shaking with lethal rage.

""He's at the Manchester airstrip,"" the man gasped, holding his hands high in the freezing drizzle. ""His private Gulfstream is fueled up. He's clearing his foreign accounts before the feds lock down the ports.""

Julian stepped forward, striking the man across the jaw with the butt of the rifle, knocking him unconscious onto the deck.

Julian ran through the shattered front door of the cabin. The kitchen was in ruins, furniture overturned, Buster’s body lying motionless by the pantry. Julian dropped to his knees in the corner, hauling up the heavy rug that concealed the root cellar hatch.

""Eleanor! Lily! It's me! It's Julian!""

The oak crossbar rattled beneath the boards. The hatch creaked open, and Eleanor’s tear-stained face emerged from the darkness. When she saw Julian standing there, covered in blood, mud, and rain, she let out a broken sob, pulling Lily up with her.

Lily wrapped her small arms around Julian’s neck, burying her face into his wet collar. ""Daddy... you came back.""

""I will always come back,"" Julian whispered, holding them both so tightly his ribs ached.

He pulled the satellite phone from his pocket, dialing the number Frank had scribbled on his palm. When the connection clicked, Julian spoke with a clarity that cut through decades of Sterling lies:

""Agent Davis. My name is Julian Vance. I am the son of Thomas Vance, and I have the original nineteen ninety-nine Sterling ledgers and the confession tape. Richard Sterling is at the Manchester airfield, preparing to board a private jet. If you want him alive, you have exactly fifteen minutes to scramble your tactical units.""

Julian lowered the phone, looking at the warped photograph of his real mother sitting on the kitchen counter beside his wife and child.

Outside, in the far distance over the mountain ridge, the heavy, rhythmic thumping of federal helicopter blades began to tear the night apart."
