Chapter 8 - Sins of the Sterling Fleet

Julian’s breath seized in his throat. The flashlight beam trembled slightly in his hand, casting frantic arcs of light across the woman’s face. She didn't flinch away from the glare; she merely took a slow, deliberate drag of her cigarette, the paper hissing as a raindrop struck the ember.
""You look just like your father,"" she said, her voice rough, seasoned with tobacco and harbor fog. ""Not Richard. Your real father.""
""Who are you?"" Julian demanded, taking a half-step forward, his shoes splashing in the standing puddles atop the rotting planks. ""What is this? Why did you threaten my family?""
""I didn't threaten your family, kid,"" she said, tossing the cigarette butt into the churning black water below. It hissed and was swallowed by the dark. ""Richard’s men tapped your phone line three weeks ago. When you dialed nine-one-one tonight, they intercepted the relay. The men in that black SUV were Richard’s cleanup crew. If I hadn't made that call to draw you out here, you'd be burning inside that suburban cage right now.""
Julian’s jaw tightened. ""Prove it.""
The woman reached inside her canvas coat with slow, deliberate movements, pulling out a stained manila envelope wrapped in heavy plastic. She held it out across the rain. Julian hesitated, then snatched it from her fingers.
""My name is Sarah Vance,"" she said quietly. ""Twenty-seven years ago, I worked the shipping manifests for Sterling Maritime at Berth 14. Your father—my older brother, Thomas Vance—found out Richard was using the midnight freight lines to move stolen military armaments down south. Thomas threatened to go to the federal marshals.""
Julian’s fingers were numb from the cold as he tore open the plastic. Inside were yellowed manifest sheets, bank statements stamped with the Sterling corporate seal, and an official autopsy report with a coroner's signature dated August 14, 1999.
""Thomas died in an industrial accident,"" Sarah continued, her voice flat, devoid of tears that had dried up decades ago. ""A container cable snapped. Crushed him on the dock. Two days later, his wife—your mother, Julian—was admitted to County General with acute poisoning. They took you from her crib before she even stopped breathing.""
Julian’s vision blurred. The rain mingled with the cold sweat on his face. ""Richard adopted me. He raised me.""
""Richard bought you,"" Sarah spat, her eyes flashing with cold rage. ""Clara Sterling was barren, and the board of directors was threatening to pull Richard’s voting shares if he didn't produce an heir to the dynasty. He killed your parents, stole you from the cradle, and buried the evidence in Vault 4 beneath this pier. He kept you close so that the Vance family could never use your existence to claim the estate.""
""And the key?"" Julian whispered, his fingers curling around the cold brass in his pocket.
""The key opens the security box Thomas hid in the old harbor master's office before he died,"" Sarah said, pointing toward a crumbling brick building at the end of the pier. ""Inside that box is the original ledger. It has Richard's signature on every shipment, every payment, every bribe. It is the only thing that can send him to a federal penitentiary for the rest of his miserable life.""

Suddenly, the headlights of three black SUVs ignited at the entrance of Berth 14, blinding them both in a wall of incandescent light. Tires screeched across the wet asphalt as the vehicles blocked the only exit off the pier.
From the front passenger door of the lead vehicle, Richard Sterling stepped down onto the rain-slicked dock, holding a heavy umbrella in one hand and a revolver in the other.
