A CROWN OF BROKEN BONES / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Iron Cage

Trapped in the glass cage between floors, Julian smashed his fists against the emergency override panel. Sparks sprayed from the damaged wires, but the lift refused to budge. The hydraulic brakes had locked into place.

Below him, Elena Vance walked slowly toward the elevator shaft, her bare feet leaving bloody prints on the concrete floor. She carried a heavy crowbar retrieved from an open tool chest beside the ruined van.

""Julian,"" Elena said, her voice amplified by the hollow acoustics of the shaft. ""You spent five years studying my father's operations. You memorized his supply lines, his shell corporations, and his corrupt politicians.""

She jammed the sharp end of the crowbar into the seam of the outer elevator doors, throwing her entire body weight against the lever. With a screech of tearing metal, the exterior doors wrenched open, exposing the underside of the trapped carriage.

""What you forgot,"" Elena continued, stepping onto the threshold of the shaft and looking straight up through the glass floor at Julian, ""is that my father didn't write the Vance syndicate's operational security protocols.""

She pointed the recovered pistol upward, straight through the reinforced glass panel toward Julian’s feet.

""I did.""

Julian took a step back, the panic finally breaking through his sophisticated veneer. ""If you kill me, the federal wire automatically executes! The decryption key is linked to my biometric heartbeat! When my heart stops, the evidence packet is sent to every major agency in the world!""

""I know,"" Elena replied calmly.

Behind her, Vincent walked up to the edge of the shaft, holding an encrypted satellite tablet. ""She rerouted the packet three minutes ago, Julian. While you were making your grand speech in the elevator, my tech team accessed your primary uplink using the bypass code you gave Charles during your initial negotiations.""

Charles, still cowering beneath the forklift, let out a pathetic squeak.

Julian’s face went completely slack. ""That's impossible... Charles didn't have the administrative key.""

""No,"" Elena said, a dark, victorious glimmer in her eyes. ""He didn't. But Chad did. And unlike his father, Chad was desperate enough to save his mother that he gave me his father's private login twenty minutes before I walked down the aisle.""
