Chapter 14 - The Architect in the Shadows

Julian let out a bitter, raspy laugh that echoed through the shaft like dry leaves scraping over stone. ""You really don't know, do you, Vincent? You spent five years living in the shadows, believing your rivals conspired against you. You thought it was a rival family, or an ambitious lieutenant.""
He pressed his face against the glass, staring directly into Vincent’s eyes.
""Nobody ordered the hit, Vincent,"" Julian whispered. ""Nobody except the woman who designed your security.""
Vincent froze, his hand tightening around the manila envelope until the cardboard buckled. Slowly, mechanically, he turned his head to look at his daughter.
Elena stood perfectly still. The blood on her lace gown had dried into dark, rust-colored patterns. Her face was an impenetrable mask of absolute calm. She didn't blink. She didn't deny it.
""Elena?"" Vincent’s voice was barely a whisper, carrying a heartbreak deeper than any wound a bullet could make. ""What is he talking about?""
""Tell him, Elena!"" Julian screamed from the elevator, his laugh rising to a manic pitch. ""Tell him how you tracked his offshore accounts when you were twenty-two! Tell him how you realized he was going to sacrifice you to the Sterling family to cover his own expansion debts! Tell him how you gave me the coordinates of his yacht off the coast of Amalfi!""
The loading dock fell into a deathly silence. Even the dripping water from the broken conduits seemed to pause. The Vance guards lowered their weapons slightly, shifting their eyes nervously between the father and the daughter.
Chad and his mother watched from the corner, paralyzed by the sudden unraveling of the monster that had just saved them.
Elena took a deep, steady breath. The delicate lace of her wedding bodice rose and fell with rhythmic precision. She looked at Vincent—the man who had raised her like a soldier, who had taught her that weakness was a capital crime, who had forged her into a weapon.
""You were going to sell me to Charles Sterling, Father,"" Elena said softly, her voice devoid of regret. ""You had already signed the preliminary contracts in Milan. You were going to turn me into what Charles turned his wife into: a trophy to be beaten into submission.""

Vincent stared at her, his jaw trembling. ""I was securing the dynasty...""
""You were securing yourself,"" Elena corrected, raising her chin. ""So I retired you. And I spent five years orchestrating this day to ensure neither you, nor the Sterlings, nor Julian Thorne would ever control my life again.""
