Chapter 4 - The Fourth Player

The slow, sarcastic applause cut through the cathedral like a razor. Elena looked up toward the choir balcony. Leaning against the wrought-iron railing was a man in an immaculate bespoke cream suit, sipping vintage scotch from a crystal glass.
Julian Thorne.
The undisputed shadow broker of the East Coast, a man who controlled the ports the Vances used and the politicians the Sterlings bribed. His presence turned an already deadly family feud into an international crisis.
""Magnificent theater, Vincent,"" Julian called down, his tone dripping with amused malice. ""A truly poetic return. The wronged king reclaiming his stolen throne, using his ruthless daughter as the ultimate Trojan horse. I almost shed a tear.""

""You borrowed from Thorne?"" Elena demanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous register.
""I... I had no choice!"" Charles stammered. ""The real estate market tanked... I needed liquidity to show the board that we were solvent enough to merge with you!""
Julian laughed softly from the balcony. ""Which means, my dear Elena, forty billion of the funds you just transferred into your offshore accounts actually belong to my syndicate. And by my calculations, you just breached our sovereign treaty.""

Elena raised her chin, meeting Julian's icy stare without an ounce of fear. ""Then consider it a hostile takeover, Thorne.""
Julian smiled, but his eyes were completely devoid of warmth. ""Take a look at your father's wrist, Elena. Look closely.""
