Chapter 1 - The Hollow Echo

The chandelier crystal trembled as Julian Vance rose from one knee. In his tailored black tuxedo, he loomed over the opulent ballroom like a shadow carving into light. Beside him, six-year-old Lily clutched the fabric of his trousers, her little chest hitching against silent tears, the faint scratches on her flushed cheeks catching the harsh ambient glare. In Julian’s gloved palm, the silver diamond-encrusted dagger brooch caught the ballroom lighting, sending fractured slivers across the pale, mortified face of Lady Eleanor Ashford.

A collective gasp swept through the four hundred guests assembled for the Vance Family Annual Charity Gala. A heartbeat earlier, Eleanor had been crying thief, demanding security strip-search an orphaned flower girl who had allegedly ruined a family heirloom.

"You swore it was in her pocket, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, carrying the lethal weight of absolute authority. "Yet it was tucked within your own silk bodice. An interesting place for an innocent artifact to hide."

Eleanor’s lips parted, trembling beneath a thick coat of rouge. The arrogant, condescending smirk that had defined her social dominance evaporated. "Julian... this is an outrageous misunderstanding! Someone slipped it into my wrap—it was planted!"

"Planted?" Julian stepped forward. With every stride, the crowded sea of high-society elites parted instinctively, dread rippling through the hall. Julian had abandoned the criminal underworld seven years ago to raise the girl he swore on his dying brother's grave to protect. But standing beneath the gilded arches, the dormant monster awoke. "You struck her face. You raised your manicured hands against a child under my roof."

Eleanor backed away, her stiletto heel catching on the hem of her designer gown. "She bumped into me! She was insolent! You cannot treat me like a common criminal—my husband controls half the shipping ports in the eastern corridor!"

Julian didn’t raise his voice. He simply signaled with two fingers. Four towering figures in obsidian suits emerged from the perimeter exits, locking the ornate mahogany doors of the grand hall. The heavy thud of the deadbolts reverberated like a prison cell door slamming shut.

"Nobody leaves until the Ashford family pays their debt," Julian whispered, gently tucking Lily behind his jacket before lifting his cold, predatory gaze to the upper balcony where Eleanor's husband, Senator Robert Ashford, stood frozen in horror.

Then, the lights cut out entirely, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black chaos.
