Chapter 2 - The Darkness Between Breaths

Panic erupted in the suffocating dark of the ballroom. High-pitched screams collided with shattering champagne flutes and the violent scraping of chairs across marble.

Julian didn’t move. His senses, honed through a decade of brutal urban warfare before Lily's birth, rewired his perception instantly. In the pitch black, he dropped his center of gravity, wrapping a protective arm around Lily's trembling torso. "Close your eyes, little bird," he murmured softly into her soft curls. "Count to ten."

"Daddy, I'm scared," she whimpered, burying her nose into the lapel of his tuxedo.

Before he could whisper another reassurance, the unmistakable metallic click of a semi-automatic slide chambering a round echoed from less than ten yards away. It wasn’t his security detail; his men carried silenced sidearms with specific acoustic suppression.

A flare of muzzle flashes cut through the gloom.

Julian pulled Lily beneath the heavy mahogany banquet table just as high-caliber rounds tore through the crystal chandelier above. The massive fixture collapsed with a thunderous, terrifying roar, raining sharp shards of glass over the hysterical crowd. Screams turned feral as guests scrambled toward barricaded exits.

Across the hall, the emergency backup generators hummed to life, washing the ballroom in an eerie, blood-red emergency glow.

Julian emerged from beneath the table, holding Lily against his chest, scanning the carnage. Eleanor Ashford was on her knees, shrieking, but Senator Robert Ashford was gone from the balcony. On the lower floor, three masked men in tactical urban combat gear were methodically moving through the screaming socialites, ignoring the jewelry, ignoring the panic, their scopes fixed squarely on Julian.

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. The accusation against Lily hadn’t been an act of petty snobbery. Eleanor hadn’t staged the theft to humiliate an orphan.

The brooch had been a beacon.

A red laser dot danced over Lily’s peach tulle dress, settling directly over her racing heart.
