Chapter 1 - The Broken Altar

The crystal chandeliers overhead trembled as murmurs tore through the hundreds of elite guests. Julian Vance stood frozen at the altar, the weight of the silver locket burning against his fingertips like molten lead. Inside the small metal frame was an undeniable truth: a photo of him holding baby Clara five years ago, taken right before Elena disappeared without a trace. Now Clara, only five years old, was kneeling on the cold marble floor, filthy and shivering, using her own frail body to shield her infant sister, Lily.
On the polished aisle floor sat Julian’s bride, Victoria Sterling, sprawled among shards of shattered crystal flutes and spilt vintage champagne. Her immaculate silk gown was stained, her perfectly sculpted face twisted in a venomous scowl. “Julian, have you lost your mind?” she hissed, clutching her bruised wrist where he had shoved her away. “They’re filthy little beggars! Security, throw these gutter rats out of my wedding this instant!”
Two private guards in black suits hesitated, moving forward from the double oak doors. Julian did not look at them. He knelt down slowly, discarding his tuxedo jacket and wrapping it around Clara’s shuddering shoulders. When he lifted Clara and little Lily into his arms, feeling their ragged heartbeats against his chest, something inside him—something dormant and monstrous—snapped into place.
“Don’t touch them,” Julian said. His voice was not loud, but it cut through the cavernous hall like a razor, freezing the security team in their tracks. He turned toward Victoria, his dark eyes void of the polite affection he had faked for corporate convenience. “You said Elena died in a car crash four years ago. You swore you verified the medical records yourself.”
Victoria swallowed hard, her pupils contracting. “She did! She was sick, Julian, she—who knows where these bastards came from? You can’t throw away our merger for a counterfeit pendant!”
“Mommy didn’t die in a crash,” Clara whimpered, burying her tear-streaked face into Julian’s neck. “The bad blonde lady took Mommy’s medicines away. Mommy hid us in the basement… she told me to find the prince in the picture before the black cars arrived.”

Julian’s blood ran colder than ice. He glanced toward Victoria’s father, Senator Sterling, who was frantically texting on his phone from the front row. Julian stepped over the broken glass, holding both girls close. “This wedding is over. And by nightfall, Victoria… you will beg for the police to find you before I do.”
As he walked past the aisle, Clara gripped his collar with tiny, trembling fingers. “Daddy… the men with guns came into our cellar right before I ran out. Mommy didn’t wake up.”
