Chapter 2 - The Silent Safehouse

The rain battered against the reinforced glass windows of Julian’s private penthouse at the edge of the city. Within an hour of walking out of St. Jude’s Cathedral, he had severed all communication channels with the Sterling family and activated his private security detail, led by Marcus, a former military contractor who had served Julian’s family for a decade.
Dr. Sarah Lin, a trusted pediatrician, gently swabbed Clara’s scraped arm and examined nine-month-old Lily. Clara sat on the vast leather sofa, still clutching Julian’s black jacket as if it were a life raft, refusing to let go of a crust of bread Sarah had handed her.
“Malnutrition, severe dehydration, and minor abrasions,” Sarah reported in a muted whisper as Julian watched from the balcony doorway. “Lily is remarkably intact, which means Clara starved herself to feed the infant formula. Julian… Clara has defensive bruises on her forearms. Someone tried to physically restrain her recently.”
Julian’s knuckles turned white against his glass of untouched bourbon. “Where is Elena, Marcus?”
Marcus stepped into the room, his face grim under the low recessed lighting. He held a tablet displaying security feeds and local police scanners. “Our team reached the address Clara described—an abandoned textile factory on the docks owned by a shell corporation under Sterling Logistics. The building was set on fire forty minutes ago.”
Julian’s chest constricted. “Did they find a body?”
“The fire department pulled two bodies from the sub-basement,” Marcus said quietly. “One was a local hired thug with a gunshot wound. The other… was a female, heavily burned. The coroner’s van is on its way to the city morgue now.”

Clara suddenly sat upright on the sofa, her dark eyes wide with terror as she pointed toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the skyline. “Daddy… the red dots.”
Before Julian could move, the sharp crack of high-caliber sniper fire shattered the armored glass, sending webs of fractures across the pane as a red laser line painted across Clara’s forehead.
