Chapter 1 - The Broken Seal

Clara’s fingers traced the faded ink across the yellowed parchment. The handwriting belonged to a ghost, a father whose voice she could barely summon from childhood memories. Thomas Vance had disappeared fifteen years ago, leaving behind a wake of unpaid debts, fractured loyalties, and endless questions. Yet here, in the cold autumn breeze behind the rustic wedding barn, his words burned against her lace dress.
The biker, a mountain of leather and weathered grief who called himself Hawk, stood unmoving. His Harley-Davidson ticked softly as the engine cooled against the gravel. Behind them, Mark—Clara’s groom—stood frozen in his charcoal suit, his hand hesitating midway to her shoulder. The wedding guests watched in stunned silence, their champagne glasses catching the pale afternoon sun.
""My little sparrow,"" the letter began, Thomas’s pet name for her when she was six years old. ""If you are reading this, it means Marcus kept his word, and Hawk found you before the past did. You look beautiful today. I know you do, because you have your mother’s grace."" Clara’s breath caught in her throat. Her brother, Marcus, had died in a hit-and-run two years ago. For two agonizing years, she believed Marcus had taken every family secret to his grave.
""I didn't abandon you because I stopped loving you,"" Clara read silently, her heart hammering against her ribs. ""I left because staying meant burying you and Marcus next to your mother. The men I ran with weren't just riders; they were predators. I hid the ledger they killed for. I gave it to your brother. And now, Hawk must bring you the rest.""
Clara looked up, tears blurring her vision. ""Hawk... what is this? What ledger?""
Hawk didn't answer immediately. He looked past her, his eyes scanning the tree line bordering the gravel driveway. A muscle in his scarred jaw twitched. Slowly, he reached into his leather vest and pulled out a tarnished brass key hanging from a frayed leather cord.

""Marcus didn't die in an accident, Clara,"" Hawk said, his voice a low rumble that cut through the silence. ""He was silenced. And right now, the men who hunted him know I’m here.""
Before Clara could speak, the distant growl of three approaching engines echoed from the highway.
