A GHOST ON TWO WHEELS / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Final Ride

""You really are your father's daughter,"" Silas whispered, stepping into the vault and letting the heavy steel door click partially shut behind him. ""Always running toward trouble, never understanding who truly holds the power.""

Clara backed against the rows of safety deposit boxes, shielding the envelope behind her back. Henderson lay groaning on the floor, bleeding out. ""You murdered my mother. You had Marcus killed. And now you come here to finish it?""

""Marcus was an idiot,"" Silas said dismissively, aiming the pistol at Clara’s forehead. ""He thought a small-town detective could bring down an enterprise that funds half the political campaigns in the northwest. And your father... Thomas was weak. He chose a moral high ground that led straight to an unmarked grave. Give me the folder, Clara. Make your mother proud and die quietly.""

""No,"" Clara said, staring directly into the barrel of the gun. ""My father died a free man. You're just a slave to your own greed.""

Silas sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""Goodbye, Clara.""

Before the hammer could fall, the heavy iron vault door behind Silas was ripped open with terrifying, brute force. A massive figure covered in dust, blood, and torn leather surged forward like an avenging demon. Hawk, supported by Henderson’s two private guards, slammed his full weight into Silas, driving the smaller man headfirst into the steel corner of the deposit boxes.

The pistol flew from Silas's hand, clattering harmlessly across the marble floor. Silas slumped to the ground, unconscious, his expensive glasses shattered.

Hawk fell to his knees, gasping for breath, clutching his bandaged side. Clara rushed to him, wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her face into the rough denim of his vest. ""You came,"" she wept. ""You stayed alive.""

""Told you... I’m done running,"" Hawk coughed, a faint smile breaking through his bloodied lips.

Sirens echoed in the distance above, dozens of them converging on the bank as Henderson’s backup arrived alongside state police units alerted by the emergency silent alarm.

Clara looked down at the documents in her hand, then at the unconscious uncle who had destroyed her family. The truth was out. The ghost of Thomas Vance could finally rest.

Hawk looked up at Clara, his eyes tired but entirely at peace. ""So... little sparrow,"" he whispered, gesturing toward the sirens growing louder above. ""What do we do now?""

May you like

Clara wiped the tears and ash from her cheeks, stepping over Silas’s fallen form toward the open light of the vault exit.

""Now,"" Clara said with fierce certainty, ""we make them pay for every mile."""
