Chapter 10 - Voices of the Dead

The cabin was freezing, the iron woodstove barely beginning to push back the mountain chill. Hawk produced an ancient portable cassette player from a cupboard, inserted the tape, and pressed the cracked plastic play button. The machine whirred, tape hiss filling the tiny room before a familiar, rasping voice spoke out of the darkness.
""Clara. Marcus. If you are hearing this, Silas has made his move.""
Clara pressed both hands against her mouth, tears spilling freely down her cheeks. It was him. Her father. The voice was older, strained by sickness and regret, but unmistakably Thomas Vance.
""Hawk will bring you the books,"" the recording continued, accompanied by the dull cough of an ailing man. ""I kept records of every payoff Silas took from the state syndicate. But there is something you must know. The fire that killed your mother... it wasn't an electrical short. Silas set that blaze to force me into line. He wanted me compliant. He killed Sarah, and he made me watch her grave while he built his empire.""
The tape clicked, a long pause stretching between the reels.
""Silas thinks the original ledger is in Marcus's possession. It isn't. Marcus only had copies. The original legal documents, signed by the governor and Silas's shell corporations, are locked inside the safe deposit vault beneath the First National Bank in Helena. The key is what Hawk is bringing you.""
Clara looked down at the brass key resting on the table. It wasn't just a trunk key; it was a dual-mechanism safety deposit key, stamped with an account number: 0842.
""Take down the empire, Clara,"" Thomas’s voice cracked with finality. ""Burn it all. Don't let my silence be your shroud.""
The tape clicked off.

Clara stared at the player, her jaw tightening until her teeth ached. ""He killed my mother.""
Hawk nodded slowly. ""And tomorrow morning, Silas will use every corrupt cop in this county to seal Helena before we can reach that vault.""
