Chapter 13 - The Freight Car Sanctuary

The rhythmic, monotonous rocking of the freight train lulled the vast silence of the evening. Amber sunlight poured through the open slats of the wooden boxcar, illuminating the swirling motes of hay dust and the drying blood on Thomas’s makeshift bandage.

Elena sat with her back against the corrugated steel wall, her eyes hollow with exhaustion but steady. She held Leo in her lap, her fingers tangled gently in his hair. The boy had finally succumbed to exhaustion, sleeping with deep, ragged breaths, his small hand still loosely gripping Thomas’s index finger.

""How bad is it?"" Elena asked, her voice barely louder than the hum of the wheels beneath them.

Thomas tested his right arm, gritting his teeth against the throbbing ache. ""Through-and-through. Missed the bone. It burns like hell, but I won't bleed out."" He managed a faint, tired smile. ""I’ve had worse burns from the bakery ovens.""

Elena looked away, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. ""I never meant to bring this to your door, Thomas. I swear to you. I tried to disappear in Milwaukee, then Detroit. But Vance had private investigators on every bank account, every social security registry. When they cornered me outside Syracuse, I knew I had hours left. I remembered you talked about this town years ago... about how quiet it was.""

""Why didn't you tell me about him?"" Thomas asked softly, his gaze resting on the sleeping toddler. ""Six years ago. When I ran.""

Elena closed her eyes, leaning her head back against the wood. ""I didn't know I was pregnant until three weeks after you disappeared into thin air. And then Vance moved in. He assumed Leo was his. He raised him in that gilded cage, parading him around like a trophy, building trusts in his name to launder cartel money. If I had reached out to you, Vance would have killed you just to eliminate any doubt about Leo’s paternity.""

She opened her eyes, staring straight into Thomas’s face.

""I stole the real birth certificate, Thomas. And the DNA test. It’s all registered in a safety deposit box in Denver. Along with Vance's offshore account ledgers. That’s why Julian was hunting us. Vance doesn't want the boy back out of love. If Leo dies, the trust reverts to Vance unconditionally.""

Thomas stared at the ceiling of the swaying car. The magnitude of what they were carrying was staggering. They weren't just fleeing a local enforcer; they were running from a billionaire syndicate boss whose entire empire hinged on the heartbeat of a one-year-old child.

Suddenly, the train began to decelerate sharply. The air brakes hissed violently along the undercarriage, throwing them forward against the straw.

Outside, flashing blue lights reflected against the pine trees lining the track.
