Chapter 5 - Whispers Through the Flour

The kitchen smelled of yeast, bleached flour, and the cold draft sweeping in through the compromised back door. Thomas flattened his back against the wall of the narrow hallway, shifting Leo so the boy’s head was tucked securely beneath his chin.

""Not a sound, Leo,"" Thomas breathed, barely moving his lips.

The boy nodded against his throat, pressing a small thumb into his own mouth to stifle his breathing. He was terrified, yet remarkably obedient, as if terror had been a routine part of his short existence.

A floorboard creaked in the dry storage room fifteen feet ahead.

Julian was moving systematically. He was checking the pantry and the walk-in cooler first, assuming Thomas would hide like a prey animal. Thomas glanced around the narrow hall. To his left was the basement hatch—an old, heavy cellar door leading to a root cellar and an abandoned coal chute that exited into the neighbor's overgrown flower garden.

It was the only way out. But opening the cast-iron latch would produce a metallic grind loud enough to echo through the empty shop.

Thomas took a slow breath. He reached out with his free hand and deliberately knocked a stacked tower of empty tin baking sheets off the hallway shelf.

The crash was catastrophic. Sheet metal clattered, bounced, and echoed through the hollow building like gunfire.

Instantly, heavy footsteps sprinted from the dry storage room toward the noise. Thomas didn't wait. He didn't run toward the basement; he lunged directly into the walk-in freezer just opposite the shelf, pulling the heavy insulated door shut until the latch clicked softly into place, leaving them submerged in freezing darkness.

Through the small, frosted viewing port in the thick steel door, Thomas watched.

Julian appeared in the hall, tall, lean, and holding a suppressed semi-automatic pistol low against his hip. He wore a dark woolen overcoat, his sharp, predatory face sweeping over the fallen pans. Finding nothing, Julian's gaze slowly traveled across the floor.

Thomas followed his eyes and felt his blood turn to ice.

Scattered across the polished grey concrete, glowing beneath the fluorescent bulb, were bright, multicolored sprinkles that had shaken loose from Leo’s pocket. Julian stopped. He knelt, touched a sprinkle with the tip of his gloved finger, and smiled.

He turned his head slowly, locking his eyes straight onto the freezer's viewing port.
