Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

""Go, Leo! Now!"" Thomas shoved the boy gently up the angled steel chute.

The child scrambled upward with surprising agility, driven by pure terror, his little canvas sneakers slipping momentarily on the rusted iron before finding traction. Thomas turned around and raised the pistol just as Julian’s silhouette emerged from the gloom of the stairwell.

""You're a dead man, Tommy!"" Julian snarled, his voice a hoarse rasp from the gas. He held a combat knife in his left hand, his right arm dangling at an awkward, fractured angle.

Julian lunged forward, using the darkness to his advantage. Thomas pulled the trigger.

Crack.

The gunshot in the enclosed brick basement was deafening, the muzzle flash illuminating the decaying walls for a split second. The bullet clipped Julian’s left bicep, causing him to spin, but the enforcer didn't stop. He crashed into Thomas with the weight of a freight train, knocking the gun from Thomas’s hand into the thick dirt.

They slammed against the stone foundation. Julian drove the heavy hilt of the knife toward Thomas’s throat. Thomas caught the attacker’s wrist with both hands, muscles tearing as he fought to keep the steel blade inches from his jugular. The enforcer was bleeding and broken, but he was driven by manic fury.

""Vance doesn't just want the boy,"" Julian wheezed, spit flying from his lips onto Thomas’s face. ""The boy is Vance’s legal heir! Elena stole his documents! His whole empire belongs to that brat!""

The words hit Thomas like a physical blow. Elena hadn't just fled a bad relationship; she had exposed Vance’s entire financial structure to the federal courts, naming her son as the sole beneficiary of the trust Vance had built on blood money. That was why Julian had hunted them across four states.

Thomas roared, driving his forehead straight into Julian’s broken nose. Cartilage snapped with a sickening crunch.

Julian screamed, his grip faltering. Thomas brought his knee up into Julian’s groin, twisted out from under the heavy frame, and grabbed the nearest weapon within reach—an iron furnace poker resting beside the old boiler. With a desperate swing, Thomas struck the side of Julian's skull.

The enforcer crumpled into the dirt and lay motionless.

Panting heavily, blood dripping from a cut above his own eyebrow, Thomas scrambled toward the coal chute. He pulled himself up through the narrow opening, emerging into the crisp afternoon air behind the dense honeysuckle bushes of the neighboring garden.

The alley was quiet, but fifty feet away, parked behind an abandoned garage, the trunk of a dark black sedan popped open from the inside.

A pale, trembling hand reached out, clawing desperately at the car's taillight.
