Chapter 3 - Gathering the Broken Threads

By midday, Julian’s private security chief, Carter, arrived with three thick binders. Carter was an ex-intelligence analyst who spoke in clipped sentences and saw the world in terms of vulnerabilities and leverage.

"You were right about the shell companies, Julian," Carter said, laying open a network diagram on the mahogany coffee table. "Vance isn't just taking kickbacks on the dockland redevelopments. He’s running an extortion pipeline through his cultural foundations."

Elena leaned forward, her interest piqued despite the dull ache in her shoulders. "His cultural foundations? He sits on the board of three major art institutes."

"Precisely," Carter said. "He targets independent artists—sculptors, painters, curators who depend on his foundation’s grants to keep their spaces open. If they comply with his financial laundering schemes, their careers flourish. If they resist..." Carter trailed off, glancing apologetically at Elena. "He uses physical intimidation and legal blacklisting to bury them."

"I wasn't the first," Elena whispered, a sudden realization washing over her.

"No," Julian confirmed solemnly. "Carter found records of at least four women who abruptly shuttered their galleries and left the state over the last five years. All received sudden, non-disclosure-backed settlements from Vance's personal accounts."

"They suffered alone," Elena said, her voice rising with an indignation that began to burn away her lingering fear. "They thought nobody would believe them because he was a pillar of the community."

"We are going to find them," Julian stated. "Not to drag them into the spotlight against their will, but to give them their voices back if they want them. Marcus Vance built an empire on isolation. His vulnerability is community."

Julian turned to Carter. "Reach out to them through secure channels. Offer full legal protection, relocation if necessary, and complete financial independence from any Vance-tied institutions. Let them know they aren't screaming into the void anymore."
