Chapter 5 - The Safe Haven

Julian returned home to find Elena in the conservatory, painting.
The easel held a raw, chaotic canvas of deep purples, fractured golds, and aggressive slashes of black. It was unlike the delicate, serene landscapes she usually produced. It was pain rendered in acrylic.
"Julian," she said without turning around, recognizing the rhythmic sound of his footsteps. "How did it go?"
"The trap is set," he said, coming to stand beside her, observing the canvas. "He knows the ground is giving way, but he doesn't know where the next collapse will be. How are you feeling?"
"Angry," she admitted, setting her brush down with a sharp clatter. "For forty-eight hours, I was terrified. I jumped every time the wind hit the glass. But looking at this paint... I realize how much energy fear steals from you. He made me feel like an insect under glass."
"You are nobody's victim, Elena," Julian said softly.
"I am an artist, Julian. My whole life has been about observing truth and showing it to people. When he hit me, he wanted to distort my reality. He wanted me to believe that power is only cruelty." She turned to him, her eyes burning with clarity. "I received a phone call an hour ago. From Clara Dupont."
Julian raised an eyebrow. "One of the artists Carter tracked down in Chicago?"
"Yes," Elena said, her voice softening. "She cried for twenty minutes. She thought she was crazy for four years. She thought she had brought it on herself because she accepted his sponsorship. Julian, we aren't just defending ourselves anymore. We have to finish this for every person he silenced."
Julian reached out, his hand resting gently against her cheek, careful not to touch the fading bruise on her cheekbone. "Then we do it out in the open. The museum gala on Friday."
May you like
"The annual endowment gala," Elena nodded. "Where he expects to receive the Humanitarian of the Year award."
"Where the city will see him clearly for the very first time," Julian agreed.
