Chapter 9 - The Fall of an Idol

The sound of metal handcuffs ratcheting closed against Marcus Vance’s wrists echoed across the silent ballroom.

He attempted to speak, to invoke names of judges and senators, but the lead agent merely recited his rights in a flat, mechanical cadence. As they escorted him toward the side exit, Vance glanced back at Elena.

For days, Elena had dreaded seeing that look—the furious, sadistic glare he had leveled at her in her studio. But now, stripped of his entourage, his titles, and his illusion of supremacy, he looked extraordinarily small. He was merely an insecure, cruel man whose kingdom of glass had shattered against the simplest thing in the world: an honest voice.

The media frenzy outside was deafening. Flashes illuminated the rain-slicked steps of the museum as Vance was loaded into the back of an unmarked federal sedan.

Inside the ballroom, silence lingered like heavy smoke. Then, an older woman stepped out from the crowd. It was Helen Vance, Marcus’s estranged sister and the principal trustee of the Vance Family Trust.

Helen walked straight to Elena. For a moment, the room held its breath, anticipating another confrontation.

Instead, Helen reached out, gently clasping Elena’s hands. "Thank you," the older woman whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. "My family has lived in the shadow of his cruelty for twenty years. Thank you for being brave enough to break the chain."

Elena squeezed her hands in return. "No one breaks it alone, Helen."
