Chapter 12 - Standing at the Creek

Gunfire tore through the morning silence, echoing like thunderclaps between the rocky canyon bluffs. Daniel and Kane fired in synchronized precision, using the massive creek boulders as cover. Two of Marcus’s contractors dropped instantly as return fire chewed through the riverbed, sending plumes of freezing water into the air.

Rachel crouched beside the laptop, shielding Ethan with her back. The transmission bar reached forty-two percent.

Forty-eight percent.

A stray round ricocheted off the steel bridge girder above her, showering sparks over the keyboard. Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, whispering into his teddy bear: ""Daddy is strong. Daddy is strong.""

Down in the creek, Kane took a round to the shoulder, staggering against a flat boulder. Daniel laid down covering fire, dragging Kane back into the alcove.

""I'm out of magazines!"" Daniel yelled over the din of automatic weapons.

Marcus advanced relentlessly, firing short, controlled bursts that pinned them behind the stone pillar. ""You think some digital files will save you, Danny? I own the judges! I own the field offices! Nobody cares about the truth! They only care about who's left standing!""

Sixty-one percent.

Marcus rounded the corner of the bridge, leveling his rifle directly at Rachel and Ethan. ""Turn it off, nurse. Now.""
