Chapter 1 - The Child in the Rain

The rain had soaked through Catherine’s thin beige coat hours ago, chilling her to the bone. Every gust of wind sweeping down the concrete canyon of the high-rise district felt like needles against her bare legs. Her arms ached with a deep, numbing exhaustion, yet she held the bundled fabric against her chest with fierce, instinctive vigilance. Inside the fleece wrap, barely three weeks old, lay tiny Leo. His breathing was soft, a delicate rhythm against her frantically hammering heart.

When the glass doors of the luxury tower slid open, the warm glow of the lobby sliced across the slick pavement. A man emerged. He carried himself with the lethal precision she remembered all too well: broad shoulders beneath an immaculate charcoal coat, dark hair neatly combed despite the damp night air, and a sharp jawline carved from aristocratic arrogance. Julian Vance. The heir to Vance Global, and the man who had vanished from her world nine months earlier without a backward glance.

Catherine scrambled upward from the cold stone, her voice cracking as it fought the roar of the downpour. ""Sir... please. I need work.""

Julian barely spared her a glance, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply on the granite. But as she stepped into the wash of exterior light, the raw desperation in her voice caught him. He froze. His dark eyes shifted downward, scanning her rain-drenched face, the vicious scrape marking her right cheekbone, and the soaked hem of her oversized trench coat.

""Catherine?"" His voice was a harsh murmur, stripped of his usual boardroom detachment. A flicker of shock cracked his composed mask, quickly replaced by something dark and defensive.

""Your mother... she told me to leave the city,"" Catherine choked out, her lips trembling violently from the bitter cold. ""She said you never wanted to see me again. But I had nowhere else to turn, Julian. She stripped my apartment, took my papers... she had me chased out.""

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of fury, his jaw flexing. He believed Catherine had taken a payout and vanished; his mother had produced the signed receipts months ago. ""You dare show up on my doorstep after running off with five hundred thousand dollars?"" he snapped, his finger pointing sharply down toward the service alley. ""Get out of my sight. Kitchen entrance. Now, before security drags you into the gutter where you belong!""

Tears spilled over Catherine’s bruised cheeks, mixing with the rain. She did not run. Instead, she loosened her death grip on the blanket and gently parted the top fold of the fabric, exposing the delicate, porcelain face of the sleeping infant nestled inside.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The rain seemed to freeze in mid-air. For five agonizing seconds, the powerful CEO stood paralyzed, staring at the newborn’s face—the distinct arch of the brows, the delicate cleft in the chin that mirrored his own reflection. His trembling hand slowly reached out, fingers grazing the baby’s warm forehead.

Then, Julian looked up into Catherine’s bloodshot eyes, his voice barely audible over the wind. ""Who is this?""

Before she could answer, two sleek black sedans screeched to a halt along the curb, their high beams blinding them both.
