Chapter 1 - The Cold Lens

The red indicator light atop the dome camera pulsed with mechanical rhythm, indifferent to the hysteria choking the foyer. Julian Vance stood carved from slate, his knuckles pale where they supported infant Leo against his chest. The baby’s erratic whimpers had subsided into ragged, hitching gasps, his powder-blue romper damp with perspiration and tears. Across the polished travertine, Clara remained pressed against the spiraling banister. Her fingers clawed into the polished mahogany as though the wood itself could grant her asylum from the accusation hanging in the stale air.

""Dad,"" seven-year-old Maya repeated, her voice cutting through the hollow space with terrifying clarity. Her small arm remained extended toward the hallway junction, steady and accusing. ""Look at the camera. She kicked his hands away. I saw her.""

Clara’s painted face twisted, the delicate mask of polished innocence cracking under the weight of the little girl’s unblinking stare. ""Julian, she’s confused! Maya was around the corner, she didn't see the stumble! I tripped over my hem—my heel caught the carpet runner!"" Her nude pointed pumps shifted awkwardly against the bottom riser, her manicured hand fluttering to her throat where a diamond pendant trembled. ""I would never hurt him. You know how clumsy I am in these shoes. You know me.""

Julian did not blink. The muscle along his jawline coiled, a rigid knot beneath his neatly groomed beard. He had built an empire by calculating risk and identifying deception before signatures touched contracts; he knew every subtle tremor of panic disguised as righteousness. Slowly, he shifted Leo into the crook of his left arm, freeing his right hand to slip into his trouser pocket. He withdrew his slate-gray smartphone, the screen illuminating his hollowed, shadowed features.

""You've lived under this roof for six months, Clara,"" Julian spoke, his tone devoid of rage, flat and lethal as winter frost. ""You know every inch of the architecture. You know where the art hangs. You know where the silver is kept."" He unlocked the device with a thumbprint. ""What you apparently forgot is that I rewired the auxiliary network two days ago.""

Clara’s breath caught, a sharp, audible intake that parted her blood-red lips. Her eyes darted toward the white dome in the corner, noticing for the first time the discreet dual-lens setup that bypassed the estate’s main control hub.

""The playback server feeds straight to my private cloud,"" Julian whispered, tapping the security icon. ""Let's see what the lens caught.""

A shrill chime signaled the stream loading, the buffer percentage ticking upward: forty, seventy, one hundred. As the video timestamp aligned with the incident, Clara made no sound, but her heel scraped violently backward against the stair riser, her eyes widening in horror as an unexpected third silhouette appeared in the preview frame.
