Chapter 1 - The Shattered Ivory

The sharp crunch of broken crystal beneath Julian’s polished Oxford shoes resonated through the cold expanse of the penthouse salon. Claire remained motionless on the cold Italian marble floor, her cheek pressed against the residue of fallen wine and scattered red petals. The sting across her cheekbone throbbed in sync with the violent rhythm of her pulse, while the harsh scent of spilled burgundy mingled with copper. Julian had already turned his back, smoothing the tailored lapels of his grey suit with detached precision.

""Clean yourself up,"" he commanded, his voice devoid of anger, which made it far more terrifying. It was the tone of a master addressing an inconvenient spill caused by a careless servant. He retreated down the corridor toward his private study, the heavy oak door closing with an echoing finality.

Claire sucked in a ragged breath, the jagged shards near her palms threatening to cut deeper if she trembled too visibly. Two feet away, resting on the edge of the cream sofa cushion, her phone began to hum against the fabric. The vibration sent faint tremors through the cushions.

With agonizing slowness, Claire dragged her bruised body across the marble floor. Every movement sent a flare of agony radiating from her bruised ribs. She reached upward, her fingers scraping against the textured sofa fabric before curling around the device. On the screen, the incoming caller ID illuminated her swollen eyes with a single word: Dad.

Her thumb shook violently as she swiped the green icon and brought the speaker to her ear.

""Daddy..."" she whispered, her voice fracturing under the weight of months of hidden torment.

Across the line, the hesitation lasted less than half a second. ""Claire."" The deep, measured baritone of Arthur Vance filled the silence of her despair, cutting through the haze of fear. Yet beneath that legendary composure was an edge of steel she had not heard in years. ""Where are you?""

""I... I can't leave,"" she wept quietly, keeping her eyes fixed on the hallway where Julian's shadow might reappear at any second. ""He took the keys. He said if I step outside—""

""Stay awake, Claire,"" Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping into an ominous, authoritative register that commanded entire boardrooms. ""I am coming.""

The line remained open, but before Claire could breathe another syllable, the heavy study door down the hall clicked open again, and the slow, deliberate footsteps of Julian began to approach.
