Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Before Cole’s pry bar could descend, the sharp, deafening blast of a siren tore through the ruined wing. Flashing blue and red lights reflected through the black plastic coverings on the windows, dancing wildly across the peeling walls. Heavy footsteps pounded up the external concrete staircase—not the discreet tread of private security, but the synchronized march of a municipal tactical unit.

Henderson appeared in the doorway, soaked to the bone and breathless, flanked by the County Sheriff and three state troopers with sidearms drawn. ""Step away from the bench, Mr. Cole,"" the Sheriff shouted, his weapon trained directly on Cole’s chest. ""Step away and drop the iron, right now!""

Cole froze, his arm still raised, his eyes darting between the armed troopers and Eleanor Vance, who remained on her knees in the dirt, her fingers wrapped tightly around the handle of the ammunition box. The private security guards slowly raised their hands, backing away from Arthur and Clara until their spines hit the zinc-clad door.

""Henderson,"" Eleanor said, her voice shaking slightly as she pulled herself up using the edge of the iron drain. ""You took your time.""

""Traffic was heavy around the square, Your Honor,"" Henderson panted, though a triumphant grin cracked his usually nervous face. ""And Mr. Reyes was kind enough to obtain an emergency warrant from Judge Higgins based on the transfer receipt you left on your chambers desk.""

Cole slowly lowered the pry bar, the metal clattering to the floor. ""This proves nothing,"" he sneered, though his skin had turned the color of damp paper. ""A box found in an abandoned sewer doesn't contradict fifteen years of administrative oversight.""

Eleanor unlatched the waterproof seal of the can with two deliberate clicks. Inside lay three black ledger notebooks, along with dozens of micro-cassette tapes labeled in Sarah Miller’s precise, medical cursive. At the very top lay a signed indemnity contract between the hospital trust and Bradley Cole’s private consultancy, detailing the exact schedule of payments made to suppress evidence of the faulty neonatal ventilators—the very machines that had caused Clara’s early paralysis.

Arthur dropped to his knees beside Clara, pulling the little girl against his chest, his iron chains clanking softly against her woolen coat. Clara buried her face in his neck, her tears soaking into his collar, but for the first time in years, they were not tears of grief.

Eleanor turned to the Sheriff. ""Arrest Bradley Cole for corporate extortion, tampering with judicial evidence, and attempted manslaughter. I will provide the sworn affidavit myself within the hour.""

As the troopers cuffed Cole, Eleanor looked down into the open box. Her eyes caught a small, folded envelope labeled: For Eleanor Vance, when the time comes.
