Chapter 7 - The Lower Passages

The air in the maintenance tunnels beneath the city was thick with the scent of moldering paper and damp lime. Henderson guided Arthur Vance through the labyrinth, their footsteps muffled by the layer of fine dust covering the concrete floor. Clara walked between them, holding Arthur’s cuffed hands with both of hers, her small fingers providing what little comfort they could against the chill of the iron links. Eleanor followed ten yards behind, having traded her heavy judicial robes for a woolen trench coat, though her gold-rimmed glasses remained perched firmly on her face.

""He's right behind us, isn't he?"" Arthur murmured, his breathing labored as he struggled to match Clara’s uneven gait. His face was gray with exhaustion. ""Cole won't let us reach the dispensary. He was the one who inspected Saint Jude the night Sarah was suspended. He was the one who filed the missing medicine report.""

Eleanor caught up with them at a rusted iron gate marked with faded stencil lettering: Saint Jude Hospital – Basement Access. ""Mr. Vance, if you knew Bradley Cole was corrupt fifteen years ago, why didn't you bring this documentation to my chambers when the original case was heard?""

Arthur stopped, turning to face Eleanor in the dim yellow light of an overhead bulb. His eyes were hollow, filled with old sorrow that burned brighter than fear. ""Because you were the one who signed the destruction order, Judge Vance. My wife spent three months trying to reach you, but your office sent back form letters saying the bench had reviewed the audit and found no grounds for reconsideration. Sarah thought you were taking bribes from the hospital trust.""

Eleanor felt the blood drain from her face. She remembered that summer vividly—her late husband had been dying of lymphoma in a hospice three counties away, and she had entrusted her signature stamps to her senior administrative officer. An officer who, six months later, had resigned to take a lucrative executive position with Bradley Cole’s private legal consultancy.

""I never saw those letters, Arthur,"" Eleanor whispered, the confession tasting like ash on her tongue. ""I swear to you on the memory of my husband, I never saw them.""

Arthur stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. In his eyes, Clara’s reflection flickered under the buzzing light. Slowly, the anger in his shoulders eased into a deep, desperate sorrow. ""Then we are both victims of the same ghost,"" he said.

Above them, through the rusted metal ceiling of the tunnel, the distant roar of a heavy diesel engine reverberated. It was a rhythmic, mechanical thudding that shook the brickwork, sending plumes of plaster dust drifting down through the air like gray snow.

""The demolition team,"" Henderson cried out, checking his wrist watch with panicked eyes. ""They're bringing down the west wing early! It's barely three o’clock!""

""They're not bringing down the wing,"" Eleanor said, her jaw tightening as she gripped the cold iron handle of the tunnel door. ""They're destroying the locker.""
