Chapter 8 - The Ruined Wing

The abandoned pediatric wing of Saint Jude Hospital was a landscape of decay. Water dripped from rusted copper pipes hanging from the collapsed ceiling tiles, splashing onto cracked linoleum floors littered with overturned gurneys and broken medicine vials. The windows were covered in sheets of heavy black plastic that flapped violently in the rising afternoon wind, creating a sinister, rhythmic thumping that echoed through the dark corridors.

Arthur led them through the maze of discarded equipment, his familiarity with the layout unhindered by the darkness. ""Third door past the nurses' station,"" he whispered, pointing with his chained hands toward an archway marked Clinical Research – Authorized Personnel Only.

Clara clung to the tail of Eleanor's trench coat, her small shoes slipping on the wet concrete. ""Judge Eleanor?"" she asked in a tiny voice, the name sounding strange and precious on her lips. ""Is my mother's locker going to keep Daddy from going away?""

Eleanor looked down, her weathered hand gently smoothing the girl's tangled hair. ""We are going to make sure your mother is heard today, Clara. That is what this court does.""

They reached the door. It was heavy, clad in dull zinc, with a heavy padlock securing a chain wrapped three times through the handles. Eleanor pulled the brass key from her coat and handed it to Arthur. His hands shook so violently that he nearly dropped the key twice before sliding it into the tarnished keyway. The tumbler gave a stiff, mechanical resistance, then turned with a sharp snap that echoed down the empty corridor.

Inside the room, protected from the rain by intact plaster walls, stood three tall metal cabinets. Two were empty, their shelves stripped bare by scavengers or county liquidators. But the third locker was painted hospital green, secured with a digital keypad that blinked with a dead red LED.

""The power's dead to the lock,"" Arthur muttered, despair cracking his voice again. ""Sarah used the central circuit to keep the backup battery charged. When they killed the line to the block, it locked down permanently.""

A footstep sounded behind them in the long corridor—deliberate, slow, and completely confident.

Eleanor turned her head toward the door. Emerging from the gloom, flanked by two private security officers in unbadged tactical uniforms, stood Bradley Cole. He held a thin fiberglass pry bar in his left hand, and his charcoal coat was damp with rain.

""You really should have stayed on the bench, Judge Vance,"" Cole said softly, his voice carrying the smooth malice of a man who had never lost an institutional fight. ""A summary dismissal of Arthur’s case would have kept your reputation intact until your retirement next spring. Now, I’m afraid this visit to a condemned structure will have to end in an unfortunate structural collapse.""
