Chapter 10 - The Healing Season

Winter arrived with a gentle dusting of snow across the city, turning the park outside Clara and Connor's brownstone into a tapestry of white and silver. Inside, the apartment was warm, smelling of roasted cinnamon apples and fresh coffee.

Clara stood at the kitchen island, rolling out dough for sugar cookies while Leo, now crawling with unstoppable determination, chased a soft fabric ball across the living room rug. Connor sat on the floor nearby, pretending to be a mountain that Leo had to conquer, laughing whenever the boy clambered over his knees with triumphant squeals.

"Connor, you're distracting the explorer," Clara teased, brushing flour from her cheek with the back of her wrist.

"The explorer has boundless stamina," Connor replied, rolling Leo onto his back and tickling his stomach until the infant erupted into uncontrollable baby laughter. "He takes after his mother. Unyielding."

Clara watched them, her heart expanding with a warmth so profound it almost brought tears to her eyes. There was no cold silver service here; they drank from mismatched ceramic mugs. There was no rigid seating protocol; they ate when they were hungry and laughed when they pleased.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Connor stood up, his instincts momentarily sharpening, but he relaxed when he checked the peephole. It was Maria, the elderly woman who lived two doors down and often brought over homemade bread.

Connor opened the door with a warm smile. "Good morning, Mrs. Gable."

"Good morning, Connor," the kind woman said, handing him a warm loaf wrapped in a gingham cloth. "I smelled your cinnamon and thought this might pair nicely with breakfast. And how is little Leo today?"

"He's conquering living room mountains," Connor laughed, stepping aside to let her peer in.

After exchanging warm pleasantries and thanking her, Connor closed the door. He turned to Clara, holding the warm bread. "You know, in twenty-eight years living in that mansion, I never once knew the name of anyone living on the same street. We had security gates to keep the world out, but we ended up locking ourselves in."

"Community isn't built behind gates, Connor," Clara said softly, walking over to wrap her arms around his waist. "It’s built across thresholds. You gave us this life."

"We gave it to each other," Connor said, resting his chin on her hair. "And no one will ever take it away."
