Chapter 4 - The Iron Dowager

At eight o'clock in the morning, the heavy mahogany doors of Vance Logistics Headquarters swung open, and Eleanor Vance strode through the reception floor with the posture of an empress inspecting an outpost. She wore a bespoke cream wool suit, dark designer sunglasses, and carried a croc-embossed handbag worth more than most of the staff made in a year.

Her arrival was unannounced, yet the front desk receptionists immediately straightened their spines, lowering their eyes in deference.

"Where is my son?" Eleanor demanded, not breaking stride as she moved toward the executive elevator bank.

"Mr. Vance is in Boardroom A, Mrs. Vance," the receptionist answered nervously. "He requested that he not be interrupted—"

Eleanor didn't listen. She swept past the frosted glass doors, her heels clicking like metronomes across the polished terrazzo flooring. She pushed open the heavy double doors of Boardroom A, expecting to find Connor cowering or sheepish, waiting to apologize for his theatrical departure the night before.

Instead, the room was filled with eight people.

Connor sat at the head of the conference table, cleanly shaven, dressed in a sharp navy suit, his face completely composed. Flanking him were two corporate attorneys, the firm’s chief financial officer, and three senior members of the board of directors. Sitting on the side table was Detective Alvarez, dressed in plain clothes with a badge clipped to his belt.

Eleanor stopped in her tracks, her hand tightening around her handbag strap. "Connor, what is the meaning of this circus?"

"Good morning, Mother," Connor said calmly, not standing up to greet her. "Please, take a seat. Mr. Pendelton is already joining us via speakerphone from his office."

"I do not take orders from you in a building my husband built," Eleanor said coldly, looking around the table with contempt. "Gentlemen, I apologize for my son’s dramatics. His wife suffered an unfortunate emotional breakdown last evening, and he is clearly projecting his exhaustion."

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Alvarez interrupted, his voice deep and measured. "I am here regarding an assault incident reported at the Vance residence at approximately eight-forty-five last night. The victim has filed a sworn complaint, accompanied by hospital forensic photographs."

Eleanor’s lips curled in disdain. "A frivolous dispute between household members. My son will have the charges dismissed within the hour."

"I will do nothing of the sort," Connor said, sliding a thick manila folder across the mahogany table toward her. "And the police report is only the beginning of your concerns today, Eleanor."

The use of her first name hit Eleanor like an icy slap. Her eyes widened slightly behind her sunglasses, which she finally took off with a sharp, defensive flick of her wrist. "How dare you speak to me like that?"

"Open the folder," Connor commanded softly.

Eleanor stared at the paper envelope as if it were contaminated. "I will not participate in your childish games."

"Then I will summarize for the board," the Chief Financial Officer spoke up, his voice brittle. "Over the past five years, Mrs. Vance has misappropriated two point four million dollars from the family subsidiary funds through falsified estate maintenance vouchers. Funds that were authorized under the pretext of healthcare, educational trust reserves, and property preservation were siphoned into personal accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands."

The boardroom was deathly quiet. Eleanor’s proud facade slipped for a micro-second, a flicker of panic darting across her eyes before she rebuilt her sneer.

"Those funds are mine by right of marriage!" she snarled.

"They belonged to the company's employee retirement surplus, routed through my personal salary allotment," Connor stated coldly. "You committed grand larceny against the company, Mother. And you used that stolen power to abuse my wife under my own roof."
